LEVY: Don’t be a racist for Halloween

Growing up, I was told I could be anything or anyone on Halloween. I was lucky to have my creativity encouraged, from dressing up as a chess piece when I was in elementary school to a star-covered “Kevin Space-y” get-up when I studied abroad.

Elon students distribute flyers outside Lakeside Dining Hall protesting Aramark's treatment of animals

When Elon University students walked into Lakeside Dining Hall for lunch today, they were handed a pamphlet with the headline, "The Life of an Aramark Chicken." The front of the flyer featured a picture of an abused chicken. The pamphlets were being handed out by senior Marissa Costner and Humane League member Maddie Segal. "We are asking [Aramark] to change a few of their policies to make it better for animals," Segal said.

Football finding footing in run game

Even though the Elon University football team has struggled to score points offensively, the Phoenix has been able to move the ball well on the ground. Things were no different on Saturday, as Elon ran for 156 yards on 39 carries, averaging exactly four yards per rushing play in its 35-7 loss to the sixth-ranked University of Richmond.

As Breast Cancer Awareness month concludes, Elon continues to show support

There are currently 6,008 undergraduate students at Elon University, according to the Elon Admissions website, and 3,545 of them are women. According to Breastcancer.org, one in eight women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer in their lifetime. Applying these statistics, 443 Elon women will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in their lifetime. It is because of these staggering numbers and national prevalence of the disease that Elon actively participated in spreading awareness during October.

Authorities unconcerned about Halloween safety, advise against clown costumes

Halloween is expected to be filled with more treats than tricks, according to local law enforcement authorities, but Town of Elon Police Chief Cliff Parker had some advice to offer students in light of recent events: Avoid creepy clown costumes. “While it’s not illegal for somebody to dress that way ... it could cause issues,” he said.

Students film biggest budgeted movie in Elon’s history over Fall Break

Over the span of nine days, 37 Elon University students were running around with cameras, props and actors, spending around 13 hours a day filming “Providence,” a short film written and directed by senior Kenner Clark. Taking place in a rural college town in North Carolina, “Providence” follows four characters that become entangled in a crime of passion and how a deteriorating relationship reaches its breaking point in 36 hours.

Agu’s brace not enough for men's soccer vs. Delaware

The difficult Homecoming Saturday continued late into the evening for the Elon University athletics teams as the men's soccer team lost to Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) rival University of Delaware 3-2 at Rudd Field. The Phoenix’s two first-half goals from junior striker Elijah Agu proved to be in vain, as the Blue Hens were able to recover from a 2-1 deficit to get the win at Rudd Field by a score of 3-2 on Saturday night.

Football drops Homecoming game to Richmond

The Elon University football team kept it close against the sixth-ranked University of Richmond in the first half, but the Spiders turned on the jets after halftime en route to a 35-7 win Saturday afternoon at Rhodes Stadium. The Phoenix only trailed 6-0 after two quarters during the Homecoming game, but the Spiders scored touchdowns on their first four possession after the break. “Early on, we came out pretty competitive in the first half and made some big stops,” said Elon head coach Rich Skrosky.
