CAMPUS VOICES: #SeeMeElon aims to promote inclusivity on campus

Diversity demographics can be quantitatively defined. Elon University has made significant strides in becoming more diverse, with the percent of diverse students increasing from only 8 percent in 1999 to 20 percent racially and ethnically diverse students in the Class of 2020. Inclusion, on the other hand, is a feeling and sense of belonging that cannot be compiled into a statistic.

Vigil for Offstein brings student athletes, community to Belk Track

At 7:30 p.m. Thursday, more than 100 Elon community members — mostly Elon University student athletes — gathered on the hill beside Irwin Belk Track to pray, sing and share stories about freshman Molly Offstein. Offstein, a cross country runner and Honors Fellow, was struck by a car on her morning jog Monday and is now in a medically induced coma at the UNC hospital.

Reeves ready to maximize ‘truly talented’ Elon

It’s fair to say that neither Marc Reeves nor the Elon University men’s soccer team expected to be in this situation. Reeves had been enjoying a run of success never before seen at Radford University, winning three straight Big South Conference regular season championships and making back-to-back NCAA Tournaments. Meanwhile, Elon finished in the top four of the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) for the third time in its three years in the CAA. With the entire starting lineup returning, former head coach Chris Little’s bunch seemed to have sights set high.

EDITORIAL: Elon must diversify senior staff

 

Of Elon University’s 15 people on senior staff, 13 are white, 11 are men and 10 are white men. These 15 people who sit in the highest positions at our university are simply not representative of our student body, which is 59 percent female and 20 percent racially or ethnically diverse. Though Elon prides itself on its unprecedented commitment to diversity, if our university’s highest held offices are still primarily filled with white men, then we are not truly amplifying the voices of diverse perspectives. The university has come a long way in its efforts to not only recruit students of diverse backgrounds, but also make them feel like they belong at Elon.

Seeking more: Women's basketball readies for CAA Tournament

The tears had started to come down senior forward Jenifer Rhodes’ face. In what could be her final game in Alumni Gym, Rhodes had tied her career-high with 21 points, leading Elon to a 82-48 win over the University of North Carolina at Wilmington March 1 and, with it, the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) regular season title. That title, and all the work that was put in to get it, had Rhodes on the cusp of crying.

Latest parking lot sparks curiosity among Elon Elementary

Elon University is continuing to grow its campus with the expansion of the Love School of Business and the Schar Center. Its latest expansion effort can be seen with the construction of a new parking lot adjacent to the McMichael Building. The parking lot is set to have 165 parking spaces available for faculty, staff and visitors, according to Dan Anderson, vice president of University Communications. It will replace some existing parking spaces between the Colonnades Neighborhood and McMichael. The spaces being eliminated will be used for Sankey Hall. The construction of the parking lot is set to be complete by the end of the 2017 spring semester, which is when Sankey Hall will begin to be built.

OPINION: AI poster competition proves Elon has entered AI psychosis

Elon University’s School of Communications and Love School of Business held the “Make Your Mark” artificial intelligence poster competition. The first of its kind on campus, the event drew the attention and ire of art and communications students. It featured a $650 prize pool and was held in three parts: a training session March 31, the competition April 2 and the award ceremony April 3. The outrage lasted the entire week. Has Elon entered an AI psychosis?

Elon Music Theatre professor helps produce new Broadway show

Assistant Professor of Music Theatre Jacob Brent is reconnecting with the musical that launched his Broadway career. Decades after his debut in “Cats,” he is returning to the whimsical world as a member of the producing team for its newest revival, “CATS: The Jellicle Ball,” opening on Broadway April 7.
