Extracurricular Winter Term courses return to Elon for sixth year

Melissa Martlock, now a sophomore, inherited the role of both teacher and student during last Winter Term when she taught a crochet class as part of the Burst the Bubble program. The Burst the Bubble program is returning to Elon University, providing students with the chance to teach a course during Winter Term. Burst the Bubble programs are relaxed, free and student-led, according to Evan Heiser, assistant to the vice president of student life.

Pro Bono Week introduces law students to local legal associations, attorneys

Elon University’s School of Law’s first annual Pro Bono Week presents students and Greensboro community members opportunities to meet professionals who provide free legal work to the community. The American Bar Association developed the program several years ago as a time to celebrate different professions in the field, according to Alexis Martinez, assistant dean of Student Affairs.  Pro Bono week is celebrated nationally. “The week highlights different ways of social justice around Greensboro and around the country and also identifies gaps in legal terms,” Martinez said.

Lauren Kearns honored with student’s choice award nomination

“Lauren Kearns’ versatility as an educator, administrator, director and visionary has helped create a dance program where students are eager to learn and dance. By developing a Bachelor of Fine Arts program at Elon University, she has created a conservatory style program at a small liberal arts school.” This is not the biographical blurb on Elon University’s website for associate dance professor Lauren Kearns.

Changing hair styles: natural vs. products

A relaxer (or commonly referred to as a perm) chemically straightens the hair. It comes with a creme and an activator which is applied to coarse textured hair to loosen the strands and make it look straight. Sophomore Aviya Payne has been getting a relaxer in her hair since she was 10.

Zombie Walk Spooks Elon Community

La Cocina and Yo-Zone attract many customers to Burlington's Holly Hill Mall but this weekend, a different kind of event was luring in a large, diverse group of people. The second annual Zombie Walk for charity took place on Saturday, October 27th and some even rose from the dead to support the cause.

Few are strangers to failure. But Elon University’s book club, Read and Lead, selected this year’s book, “Failing Forward,” to teach students how to learn from failures and improve upon them. The Read and Lead program invites students to join a book club concerning leadership development.

Imam blasts misconceptions about Islam at Real Talk session

No question was off-limits to those gathered in Moseley Center’s Oak Room for “Some Real Talk with the Imam,” which invited members of the Elon community to receive clarification on common misconceptions about Islam. The event, hosted by Better Together, also offered a space for students to learn about the history and theology of the religion from Imam Abdullah Antepli, Muslim chaplain at Duke University. “It is the social homework of Americans to understand Islam as a religion and to understand Muslims as people,” Antepli said. Panel discussion offers diverse viewpoints on Christian tradition

A panel of four Elon University faculty and staff members came together Monday night in the Isabella Cannon Room to discuss the traditions and experiences that have shaped their understandings of Christianity. “For Christians, our point of view is formed by how we use and interpret the bible,” said associate chaplain Jan Fuller in her opening address.

McCrory, Christie rally for Republican support in Smithfield

More than 5,000 people attended a rally and barbeque supporting Pat McCrory the Republican candidate for governor Friday night in Smithfield, N.C. The event, held at a Central Tobacco Exchange, Inc. warehouse, featured appearances by major North Carolina Republican politicians and headlined New Jersey Governor Chris Christie. "We're gonna have a Carolina comeback and it starts tonight," McCrory, the former mayor of Charlotte, told the enthusiastic crowd. Students, faculty celebrate Lunar New Year, lion dance

Marking the beginning of a new year on the lunar calendar, four Elon organizations and the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life held their annual Lunar New Year celebration. Elon’s McBride Gathering Space came to life with lanterns, interactive games and Asian cuisine.
