Financial model restructured on yearly basis

A number of liberal arts colleges across the nation are being forced to reconsider their financial models because of the increasing amount of money universities spend per student, according to a recent report from Inside Higher Ed. Although Elon is considered one of the nation's "Best Value" institutions, it too must constantly revise its financial model in order to ensure long-term sustainability, according to Gerald Whittington, vice president of business, finance and technology. "We rethink our financial model every year," Whittington said.

Changes in Elon application for admission intended to narrow search for prospective global citizens

The Elon University admissions application is getting an update, changes ranging from different essay questions to new scholarships and gap semester programs. "We are deliberate as ever in trying to get to know our applicants," said Greg Zaiser, dean of admissions.

Elon addresses shortage of math, science educators with new master's programs

Elon University officials hope to start a new master's program for science and math education in December 2013, according to David Cooper, dean of the School of Education. The new program is still in the beginning phases of development and Cooper said he thinks a comprehensive proposal will be ready for review by the end of this semester.

Update on potential internship stipends

After writing my article about the stipends Elon University’s School of Law provides for students doing summer internships, I learned more from law student Jason Senges about how the program works and am excited to share this information on The Pendulum blog.  The Public Interest Law Society (PILS) stipend only goes to a student that is doing public interest work.  Last year’s recipients worked in a public defender’s office and with Guardian and Litern.  The stipends for the Leadership Fellows benefit non-profit and public interest practices by enabling them to have interns work for them because the interns can work for free.  As Senges explained, had it not been for the stipend, he would not have been able to work for the entirety of the summer.  The stipends are a way the law students can give back to the communities, according to Senges.

New organization aims to help students maintain a healthy lifestyle

Rachel Amato has never had it easy when it comes to food options. The Elon University junior is a vegetarian, lactose intolerant and has acid reflux. She is also the founder of Eat Right Elon, a new organization on campus that aims to help college students who are vegetarian, vegan, lactose intolerant, gluten free, or have acid reflux. "This organization was like an outlet, and a way for me to deal with these issues and share and discuss my problems with other students and the problems they may have with finding healthy and nutritious foods on campus," Amato said. According to Jeff Milroy, advisor of Eat Right Elon and adjunct professor of health and human performance. "It's an additional resource to increase awareness of your nutritional intake during your college years." Eat Right Elon looks to serve as a resource for people like Amato so they will not have issues finding dining options.

Elon to host engineering competition for local high school students

Dozens of local high school students will be welcomed on Elon University's campus Feb. 23 to compete in Tests of Engineering Aptitude, Mathemathics and Science, a competition coinciding with National Engineers Week. "This is an opportunity for high school students to explore engineering and decide if they want to pursue it in college or for a career," said Sirena Hargrove-Leak, an engineering professor at Elon and the main faculty sponsor of the event. The competition itself will consist of two exams that students will complete in teams of five to eight.

Elon assesses sustainabilty program
