Meal plan changes expected to bring value and convenience to students

Elon University's dining services have altered the institution's meal plan packages, introducing two new plans, All Access and Block Meal Plans, that will begin next fall. Jeff Gazda, resident district manager of Elon's Aramark, said dining services is looking forward to the new changes as they believe it will give students the best bang for their bucks. “Our research told us that students were looking for better price/value and increased flexibility from their meal plan,” Gazda said.

Students affected most by health care bill

As the North Carolina General Assembly moves forward with plans to declare parts of the federal government's recent health care bill unconstitutional, political debate continues about the legitimacy and future of the controversial policy. Along with Florida, Virginia and other states, the assembly has stated the part of the bill requiring people to buy coverage is not founded in constitutional principles.

Tuition Rise Affects Students and their Families

There's always something else to pay for. With room and board, textbooks, meal plans and tuition payments, Elon University students and their families are persistently being presented with bills. As a follow-up piece concerning the discussions about Elon's 2011-2012 academic budget, I am writing an article this week about how the recently approved 3.98 percent increase in tuition will affect students and their families. Although the increase is the lowest its been in over a decade, students expressed concerns about the consistent, yearly price raises Elon enforces, saying each slight growth leads to more pressure to pay the bills.

Super Bowl in a super community

Last night was Super Bowl XLV. In the basement screening of the McEwen School of Communications, a group of nearly two dozen gathered to eat pizza, talk and watch the game on the big screen.

Faculty and staff members rewarded for excellent work

At the Jan. 24 Elon University budget forum, the budget committee proposed a salary pool of two percent, which will go toward raises for faculty and staff members. According to Tim Peeples, associate provost of academic affairs, one percent of the salary pool is distributed to faculty and staff members who have completed all necessary tasks required of them.  The other one percent is used for merit and is distributed to faculty and staff members who have done excellent work. Peeples said the merit system acts as a motivator and helps reward faculty and staff members for excellent work. According to Peeples, the salary was not raised much this past year due to the conditions of the economy. The slight increase in tuition, however, now allows for a salary pool. Peeples said the primary method for adjusting compensation for faculty and staff members comes through a salary increase.
