Pretty with purpose: Elon lakes give campus more than visual appeal

 

Throngs of prospective students and their parents visit Elon University’s campus every day, and they are often blown away by what they see. Elon’s largely wooded areas, brick paved paths and neat landscaping all can be the subject of adoration from visiting families.

Elon Alumni Win Sprite Film Competition

Elon Alumni Dean Coots and Michael Tahan won both the fan vote and the Judge's Award for their 60 second film, "Break the Night." The short film features break-dancers, music, and lots of paint. Coots won $30,000 for directing the film, and the School of Communications received $5,000. "I really wasn't expecting to win both.

If you even pay the slightest bit of attention to college football, or even happen to tune into ESPN every so often, you know who Johnny Manziel is. The star Heisman-trophy winning quarterback from Texas A&M University has filled headlines for the past year, from the time he rolled over eventual national champion University of Alabama to when he skated through NCAA hearings and received a surprisingly small punishment for what could have been a major scandal. But what Manziel really has created will carry on long past the final snap he’ll play in an Aggies’ uniform.

More Than 700 Bricks Stolen on Campus

It's only been three weeks into the fall semester, and already more than 700 bricks went missing from the pathways and sidewalks on Elon's campus. Some call it an innocent tradition, but others, a criminal offense. Danieley Center Resident Assistant Kelle-Anne Gecawich isn't a fan of the tradition. "One of reasons why I hate it when bricks are being stolen, is the fact that when they are found, we have to carry them," Gecawich said. Upperclassmen share their views on the tradition as well. Senior Village resident Ben Perron chooses not to steal bricks because it goes against what he considers moral. Perron referenced the Bible, concerning especially the teachings of Jesus Christ. Senior Jimmy Stevenson chooses not to steal them because of the dangers that loose and missing bricks can cause when riding bicycles or skateboards. "If you go over ground where missing bricks are, you can face plant," Stevenson said. Stevenson then made reference to unfortunate personal experiences the tradition has caused him. Elon Campus Safety and Police are penalizing offenders with fines, and second time offenders can receive misdemeanor charges.

President Lambert Reflects on New Year

Campus is changing and to President Lambert, the improvements made to the university in the past 12 years when Elon College changed its name to Elon University, is remarkable. "This institution has been counted out many times along the way but has always preserved and particularly in the modern age, has always thrived," President Lambert said.

U.S. men's soccer clinches World Cup berth with 2-0 over Mexico

Over the past two weeks, various countries across the world have been playing soccer matches in a near final push to qualify for the World Cup in Brazil in the summer of 2014.

Women’s lacrosse overcomes early deficit, earns impressive Senior Day win

The Elon women’s lacrosse team capped off their Senior Day with an impressive 9-4 win over William & Mary. In a game that was delayed by four hours from its initial start time at noon due to a chemical spill, the Phoenix furiously rallied from an early 3-0 deficit to outscore the Tribe 9-1 the rest of the way. The victory moves Elon back up to .500 at 6-6.

‘Romeo and Juliet’ gets a 1970s revival in McCrary Theatre

Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” may be centuries old, but Elon University’s spring production brings it into a new era, 1970s Italy, complete with disco music, dance numbers and a cast that mirrors the age of its audience. The idea came in January of 2025, when Professor Julian Stetkevych, director of the spring play, was listening to disco music.
