Elon Dining Adds Two Options

Elon students will soon be able to enjoy biscuits and burritos on campus. Biscuitville and Qdoba Mexican Grill are opening at Elon and will be available as retail options on meal plan this fall. Biscuitville will join Topio's and Freshii in the Winter Garden Cafe.

Unpaid internship experiences under national scrutiny

Unpaid internships are leaving college seniors broke and unemployed after graduation, according to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE). For the third consecutive year, NACE reported survey results showing unpaid internships do not benefit college students, especially in post-graduation employment. In 2013, NACE found 63.1 percent of college seniors who completed a paid internship received at least one job offer, while only 37 percent of former unpaid interns were offered employment. Debby Wall, director of internships at Elon University, argued otherwise. According to Wall, all internships — paid and unpaid — benefit college students by offering course credit and experience. Wall suggested multiple internship experiences are reasons for employment offers, not the intern’s salary.

The Summer Swing: Snakes and Stephen King

In some capacity, I’ve been writing for as long as I can remember. I penned my first story in the first grade, a thriller featuring two snakes duking it out over a tasty fly at the top of a “really big rock.” (Spoiler alert: The fly makes a last-second escape.) I’ve filled the time since with sporadic journal entries, essays — some for school, some not — personal memoirs and a couple of dreadful attempts at poetry.

Elon Town Manager Passes Away

Elon's town manager of 23 years, Mike Dula, died Sunday June 30. He was 63-years-old and battled cancer for several months, according to the Burlington Times-News. Dula supervised projects including Elon University's construction and the Town of Elon housing expansion.

Private School Police Bill Signed by Gov. McCrory

A bill that makes police records at private universities available to the public was signed by Governor Pat McCrory on Wednesday. The bill, NC H142, stems from a lawsuit filed against Elon University by Nick Ochsner, an Elon alumnus and former reporter for our newscast. Elon Campus Police and other North Carolina private college police agencies are now required to disclose narrative descriptions of details surrounding arrests as well as 911 calls when requested. Ochsner sued the university after being denied a complete incident report from Elon Campus Safety and Police regarding the arrest of an Elon student.

Bill Morningstar retires after 41 years at Elon

The Class of 2013 has been at Elon University for four years. Bill Morningstar’s time at the school, both as a student and athletic coach, nearly multiplies that number by 11. To put in perspective how long Morningstar has been a part of the Elon landscape, he arrived on the campus of what was then Elon College in 1960, three years after Earl Danieley assumed the president’s office. While Morningstar graduated with a bachelor’s degree in physical education in 1964, graduation day for the Class of 2013 will mark another graduation in its own right for the 41-year coach. Officially announcing his retirement from the men’s golf program in December, Morningstar leaves a legacy decorated with more than just accolades and records on the links. Elon College — round No.

Animal Captivity class takes first steps toward building better human, non-human relationships

One of Elon University’s top goals is turning students into global citizens. But in a world where humans represent a small percentage of total life on this planet, where do non-humans fall into this plan? Students in Martin Fowler’s upper-level philosophy class “Animal Captivity: Zoos, Sanctuaries and Asylums” have been delving into this question since the class was first taught in Spring 2012 — and they may have recently found an answer. It all started when senior Thomas Berry, a philosophy major who took Animal Captivity in Spring 2012, came up with the initial concept of developing a place on Elon’s campus where humans and animals can coexist symbiotically. “Thomas had thought about this as a Leadership Fellow for a legacy project,” said Fowler, lecturer in philosophy.
