The North Carolina Supreme Court upheld a state law that prohibits registered sex offenders from using social media sites, including Facebook. The ban applies to sites that minors can join, and its goal is to protect children under 18 from registered sex offenders, according to a Raleigh News & Observer report. Opponents of the law contend it hinders registered sex offenders’ ability to re-enter society. More than 14,000 people are in the state’s Sex Offender and Public Protection Registry database, according to the report.

The town of Elon's Board of Aldermen approved annexation for the Schar Convocation Center. This allows the property of North Williamson Avenue behind Elon University's Hunt Softball Field to become property of the Town of Elon and Elon University. Before, the land was only a part of the county, but not the town.

The TickleMyRibs parking lot was packed over the weekend when the owners raised money for Little Pink Houses for Hope. The now annual "Q for the Cure" brought the community together to help families of cancer patients. The goal for the event was to raise $25,000.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office is investigating the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, according to a Sept. 25 News & Observer report. Under criminal investigation are contracts for a consulting firm hired by the department and high-ranking employees. The federal office subpoenaed the department for information on more than 30 employees and contracts in late July, according to the report.

The City of Burlington Water Resources Department is asking for volunteers to clean trash and debris from Little Alamance Creek Oct. 31. Volunteers will meet at 8 a.m. in the parking lot of the city’s Water and Sewer Pipe Maintenance Building, located at 1103 S. Burlington will host one of the meetings of the North Carolina Tea Party Constitutional Caucus Oct. 17. On-site registration begins 9 a.m. at Holly Hill Mall and Business Center, located at 309 Huffman Mill Road. According to the caucus website, its mission is to find a U.S. presidential candidate and a North Carolina senatorial grassroots candidate who “embrace limited government, individual rights, fiscal responsibility and free markets, and who represent the citizens of the State and not special interests.” The Burlington meeting is one of several that the group is holding across the state on the same date. The friendly faces behind the counter serving you cookies, sandwiches and coffee at Acorn are often thought of as just workers with some southern sweetness. One Acorn employee, Kathryn has been working in the coffee shop for over 10 years. One night, she told two Elon students her dream of taking her family to Disney World. The two girls saw the passion and heart Kathryn put into each shift, even when they lasted until 2 a.m. Lucy Smith-Williams, a freshman, and Taylor Zisholtz, a junior, decided they needed to help.
