Summering at Elon

When I decided to stay at Elon University for the summer, I was expecting to be fairly bored. I've never been the type of person who enjoys sitting around doing nothing, but since most of my friends are living the glamorous intern life in Munich or New York or Los Angeles, I resigned myself to a life of work, sleep and television. But within a week of arriving, I began to realize that this summer might not be as boring as I thought. I soon ran into an acquaintance of mine from freshman year.

Spam Sent to University E-Mail Addresses

Students checking their Elon University inbox this week may have found a strange e-mail waiting for them. Starting Thursday June 10th, many current students and alumni received a spam e-mail with the subject "Deactivation of Account!!!" Elon University officials confirm that they did not send the e-mail and students should be cautious. The e-mail asked recipients to reply to the message with information such as their username and password. "Elon University will never ask students to reply with their personal information in an e-mail," Assistant Vice President of Technology and Chief Information Office Christopher Waters said. Waters says spammers will hack into Gmail to try and obtain personal information from users. In this case, recipients can tell the e-mail is spam because although the sender is labeled "Elon University," the actual address is "gmail.com," not "elon.edu." According to Waters, the university's spam filters occasionally do not block out everything they should. Campus Technology says that students should only provide their personal information when it is through an Elon University secured login.

Welcome to the New York City fashion scene

NEW YORK CITY - New York fashion is something that has always fascinated me. Being an avid blog-reader and fashion enthusiast, I’d heard the rumors that New Yorkers only wear black and I’d listened to both sides of the who-wore-it-best debate — Parisians or New Yorkers. I’ve seen more than my fair share of New York street style photos and have been exposed to pop culture portraying New Yorkers as skinny, black-wearing, cigarette-smoking types who either work on Wall Street, sell their souls to the fashion industry or paint for a living. To put it simply, stereotypes were not going to cut it for me.

Heart of a patriot: Your government and you

My heart pumps patriotism through every vein. I embrace American ideals and values at the core of my composition. As a military child, my sense of patriotism is particularly acute.  My experiences in the United States and abroad have contributed to my heightened sense of loyalty to my country.  Although America is not perfect, it is the best country in the world. Yet today, a distinct dissatisfaction with our country seems to have settled.  Why are we so troubled to be Americans? Former President John F.

‘The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind’ changed my perspective of hunger

In my world, food is like oxygen: It’s everywhere and always present. At home it’s a flight of stairs away in a large, climate-controlled pantry or refrigerator. With my meal plan at school I have over eight dining locations to choose from on a daily basis from the time I wake up until 1 a.m. I never go into Lakeside Dining Hall or Acorn Coffee Shop hoping there will be enough food to satisfy my hunger.

Ask An Alum: Life after Elon with friends

I bet you can remember your first night at Elon University. Lying on your college-issue twin mattress, staring at the ceiling and trying to get a handle on the thoughts rushing through your head: the dorm that you now call "home," the academic and social challenges starting at 8:30 Monday morning, the friends you worried about making, and the friends you worry you’ve left behind.

Big Three breakup? Think again

The 2014 NBA playoffs came to a close June 15 when the San Antonio Spurs finished off their dismantling of the two-time defending champion Miami Heat. Though the Spurs, led by future Hall of Famer Tim Duncan and emerging star and Finals Most Valuable Player Kawhi Leonard, earned their fifth NBA title in the Gregg Popovich era, the future of Miami’s famed Big Three of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh has already supplanted the Spurs’ title as one of the many compelling headlines heading into the offseason. When James, Wade and Bosh decided to team up in 2010, the Heat became the most talked about team in recent memory.  But now, with the future of the Big Three in doubt, the word “uncertainty” can now be associated with the Heat for the first time in almost four years. After falling short in their quest of a third straight NBA title, James, Wade and Bosh can opt out of their respective contracts and test the free agent waters this offseason.  Still a very talented team, the 2014 Heat lacked enough help outside of James to topple the depth of the Spurs.  Miami won championships in 2012 and 2013 with a similarly limited roster as the 2014 squad, but team president Pat Riley and the Heat front office was always able to find productive bench players to help carry the load.  In this year’s Finals, Miami’s main problems resided in the starting lineup as well as on the bench. Wade and Bosh each put forth lackluster performances when it counted most against the Spurs.  Wade scored a combined 21 points in Games 4 and 5 of the Finals, a far cry from the 22 he put up in Game 3, all Heat losses.  Bosh’s play was equally uninspiring, as he tallied just nine, 12 and 13 points in Games 3-5 after scoring 18 points in both Games 1 and 2.  The Heat needed much more if they expected to keep up with the Spurs. The offensive production of Wade and Bosh as the Finals wore on is one reason that James could decide to bolt from Miami and split up the Big Three.  But why would he?  The Heat fell just three wins short of a third straight championship after becoming the first team in 27 years to make NBA Finals four straight seasons. Sure, the Big Three is getting older, but they should still be able to compete at a high level for at least two or three more years as a group.  First off, LeBron is always going to put up LeBron numbers (27.4 points per game in postseason). Behind him, Bosh is generally reliable on the offensive end, and Wade can still provide solid minutes, granted he stays healthy.
