While the Elon University football team lost its season opener Saturday, the week for freshman defensive back Khalil Moore could not have gone much better. Last Tuesday, as Moore finished his first day of college classes, he found out he would be starting in his first collegiate game. “I didn’t really know until after class,” Moore said.

Men's soccer stands firm in 1-0 win over Detroit Mercy

An early goal and a little bit of luck helped the Elon University men’s soccer team defeat the University of Detroit Mercy 1-0 Sunday night. The Phoenix got on the board early when sophomore forward Jaiden Fortune hit a cross from redshirt sophomore midfielder Marcel Farenholz in mid-air with his right foot and speared it past the Titan keeper for a fourth minute goal.

Elon professor to use lessons from Olympics work in class

Max Negin had a unique view of this summer’s Olympics, one that’ll surely translate to some compelling lectures and lessons in his Communications classes this fall at Elon University. He worked his fifth Olympics for NBC this summer, spending 12-hour days at the International Broadcast Center in Rio de Janeiro as a digital media manager, acting as a gatekeeper of sorts for all the content that’d be distributed across NBC’s platforms.

Ciolkowski wins Elon Opener to start cross country season

The Elon University cross country teams officially kicked off their seasons Thursday night by hosting the Elon Opener. In the men’s 6-kilometer race, sophomore Nick Ciolkowski burst ahead of the pack around with 2,000 kilometers to take the lead for good, winning the race by 24 seconds with a time of 18 minutes and 32 seconds. “He’s on another level,” said head coach Nick Polk.

McCrory warns NC to prepare for Tropical Storm Hermine

North Carolina Public Safety Secretary Frank L. Perry urged residents and visitors to the state to “Turn around, don’t drown,” warning them of the potential flooding, power outages and damage Tropical Storm Hermine threatens as the system approaches North Carolina Friday afternoon. Perry and Governor Pat McCrory met at the Emergency Operations Center in Raleigh on Friday morning to provide updates on the storm, safety tips and the government’s preparations in response to the high winds and heavy rain the storm is expected to bring.

Discussion, reflection are key in understanding a ‘tumultuous summer’

In front of an audience of around 20 students, faculty and staff, Ray Lin, Assistant Director of the Center for Race, Ethnicity & Diversity Education, sighed into his microphone. Reflecting on the shootings of black men by law enforcement officers over the summer of 2016 — including that of Alton Sterling, a 37-year-old black man who was shot and killed during a confrontation with two police officers in Baton Rouge, Louisiana — Lin urged the audience took look at the bigger picture. “These events are nothing new — they are symptoms of much larger, systemic problems,” he said.

Not only did Moore take his first college class, he found out he would be starting in his first collegiate game tomorrow for the Elon University football team as the Phoenix takes on Gardner-Webb University at 3:30 p.m. “I didn’t really know until after class today,” Moore said.
