Elon named Top 10 for national LGBTQIA inclusivity efforts by Campus Pride

Campus Pride, one of the nation’s largest advocacy groups for college lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender students and faculty, recently named Elon University in its top 10 rankings for policies, practices and programs for LGBTQIA community, according to a recent E-Net article. The Aug. 22 ranking marks the second time Elon was among the Top 25 institutions in the seven years Campus Pride has categorized universities for their LGBTQIA-friendly environments. Elon was also ranked the No.1 University in the South for Campus Pride’s list, earning five out of five stars.

Over the past several years, Jewish Life at Elon University has grown, bringing with it increased interest and support for the Jewish population. To create new and grow existing programs at Elon Hillel, Jessica Waldman will be joining as the new Director of Jewish Life.

DOJ drops lawsuit against Alamance County Sheriff Terry Johnson

GRAHAM -- Sheriff Terry Johnson and the Alamance County Sheriff's Office held a news conference Friday to speak publicly about the settlement reached that led the Department of Justice to drop its lawsuit against the Office. Almost a year ago, Federal Judge Thomas Schroeder released a 253-page document dismissing the federal lawsuit against the department, which the DOJ initially appealed. "It feels like a million pounds has been lifted off me, it has restored my faith," Johnson said. The lawsuit began in December of 2012 Sheriff Johnson and his office were accused of racially profiling and targeting Latinos since 2007.

Burlington's Allied Churches fires Executive Director

According to The Times-News, the board of Allied Churches of Alamance County has fired Executive Director Kim Crawford. Allied Churches is a homeless shelter and food pantry which also provides job and education services. The Times-News says Crawford confirmed her termination in a statement on Wednesday, referencing Allied Churches' financial challenges.

First floor of Park Place still vacant

As on-campus apartments fill up with students ahead of the start of classes, the first floor of Park Place — the newest Elon University lodging complex — is not. For months now, there have been lingering questions about which retail shops will occupy the bottom floor of Park Place. As of early August, the Burlington Times-News reported the owners of the Saxpahaw General Store are discussing making the ground floor of Park Place on Haggard Avenue their second store and restaurant location.

Students safe after shooting threat in D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C.-- Twelve Elon students experienced a close call after a potentially fatal shooting on Sunday night around 11:30 at the George Washington Center Residential & Academic Facility at NoMa. According to senior Steven Armendariz, the building's fire alarm sounded shortly after 11:30 PM.

Elon student interns at the DNC

Madison Rieger is a junior at Elon spending her week as a runner for ABC Radio. Her daily tasks can include anything from grabbing coffee for talent to scouting out delegates or speakers for radio interviews. As a communications major, Madison came to Philadelphia this week feeling well prepared and thankful to Elon for the diverse set of classes she has taken over the past two years. Hillary Clinton makes history as Democratic nominee

PHILADELPHIA-- Making history in her signature pant suit, Hillary Clinton officially became the first woman to accept a major political party’s presidential nomination Thursday night.  She accepted the nomination “with humility, determination, and boundless confidence” from her fellow Democrats. Clinton used her speech not only to discuss her past accomplishments in her decorated public service career, but also outlined her ideas for the future. The former Secretary of State thanked Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT.) for his support throughout the week and reassured the his supporters that with her as the nominee, their causes, like social justice and economic reform, will become her causes.

Millennial Voices of the DNC

These are some of the voices of millennials at the Democratic National Convention. The first two are young delegates Melissa Cairo and Jade Hamilton who reflect on what life is like as a delegate and what it could be like with Hillary Clinton as President. The final voice is of 12 year old Theo Wagnon who, although he can't vote, has a lot of hope for his future.

Donald Trump returns to North Carolina for first time after becoming Republican nominee

WINSTON-SALEM -- Donald Trump returned to North Carolina after becoming the Republican nominee at the Republican National Convention last week in Cleveland. He spent most of the rally at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds discussing the economy and criticizing his Democratic rivals, including soon-to-be presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, her running mate Tim Kaine and former Democratic presidential hopeful, Bernie Sanders.
