Shumate's single ends Elon's 5-game losing streak

Senior infielder Kory Shumate's walk-off single ended the Elon University baseball team's five-game losing streak, capping off Elon's 4-3 comeback win over the University of Massachusetts at Amherst (UMass) Friday night at Latham Park. With the score tied at three, runners on first and second base and two outs, Shumate — who had started the night 0-for-3 — kept his composure to drop a walk-off single in deep right field, scoring freshman infielder Joe Satterfield and sending all of Elon's players racing to mob Shumate.

Softball starts home tournament with 2-0 win

Hosting its first tournament of the year, the Elon University softball team defeated Wagner University 2-0 Friday afternoon at Hunt Softball Park. Both teams were scoreless until the bottom of the third when junior shortstop Hannah Olson raced around the bases to score Elon’s first run.

Women's basketball routs UNCW to win CAA title

The Elon University women’s basketball team clinched its first conference championship in its Division I era by routing the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW) 82-48 Wednesday night in Alumni Gym. With the win, Elon earned the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) regular season title, finishing conference play with a 16-2 record. It's the first conference crown in the 18 years Elon's been in Division I and the first of any kind in 35 years, leading Elon to cut down a net after the game. The championship feeling still hadn't sunk in for head coach Charlotte Smith after going up the ladder last and wearing the net around her neck.

EDITORIAL: Stay informed without sacrificing mental health

 

In the current media landscape, consumers can very easily feel overwhelmed. Our CNN apps notify us about every one of President Donald Trump’s executive orders, our Twitter feeds refresh with breaking news stories and our Facebook friends are constantly sharing articles that frustrate them. For many, the news today is consistently negative and at times scary, and the need to consume it is as constant as it is exhausting. This constant stream of negative news is resulting in a phenom now being referred to as resistance fatigue, or the tendency to become exhausted by the feeling of constantly needing to protest against unpopular government policies. In the first few weeks of his presidency, Trump has already passed a number of executive orders that will directly affect many marginalized groups in our nation, causing students and people across the country to march or protest in resistance.

Elon Eats: Warm atmosphere at Filament Coffee and Tea

Something about the twinkling lights across the ceiling and local art hanging from the walls make Filament Coffee + Tea feel like home. Less than 30 minutes west of Elon University in downtown Mebane, Filament is a cozy cafe dedicated to serving fresh coffee, tea and pastries, as well as showcasing the work of local artisans. One of Filament’s baristas, Karly Thomas, said that the cafe attracts a variety of customers, making it an interesting place to spend your time. “One of the things I love is the diversity of the people that come in,” she said.

Town of Elon encourages voluntary water conservation in response to drought conditions

The Town of Elon has announced it will implement a Stage 1 water conservation declaration as officials respond to rising temperatures and worsening drought conditions across Alamance County.During its July 8 meeting, the Elon Town Council approved a voluntary water conservation effort after the City of Burlington issued a Stage 1 water conservation declaration earlier that day.
