Business students buy real world experience: Senior fellows manage investment portfolio with portion of university endowment

At a university where engaged learning is a primary focus, finding the means to manage an investment portfolio as an undergraduate can be a difficult task for students aspiring to be professionals in the financial services industry. But such an opportunity is afforded to a select group of students at Elon University — the business fellows — some of which selected the school largely for the portfolio management program. David Campbell, a senior double major in finance and accounting, was one of those students attracted to Elon because of the opportunity to manage a portion of the university’s endowment. Campbell is one of eight business fellows enrolled in the two-semester senior investment course.

If at first you don’t secede, don’t try again

In the weeks following President Barack Obama’s re-election, conservative citizens across the country upset with Obama’s victory have been looking for alternatives rather than enbuy cialis online no prescriptiondure another term under a Democratic administration. But a radical petition originating from Texas to secede from the United States has led to the spread of secession fever across all 50 states, with considerably more than a million signatures received already. Anyone with a political science or history degree will tell you a state or nation’s reasons for secession are pretty standard throughout history: resentment from the people on the level of power being exercised by their government. But if you were to ask them if secession could be considered a legitimate option in our scenario, I think you would be hard-pressed to find a satisfactory answer justifying it. None of this secessionist folly will amount to anything.

Time to let the Phoenix out of its cage to revive school spirit

Construction of new dining hall reveals new retail outlets, food options

Construction of the new Lakeside Dining Hall at Elon University is nearing completion. Scheduled to open in spring 2013, the building will house several retail vendors as well as a dining hall serving both local and international cuisine. The retail dining area will include Freshii, a vendor offering fast, fresh food such as salads, wraps and soups, as well as several other grab-and-go options. There is space in the retail area for a full-scale Chick-fil-A, but construction of the restaurant has been paused until a university-appointed study committee examines Elon’s partnership with the franchise.

Winter Term trip to Israel encourages students to think with ‘heads, hearts’

The proposal has been approved. The itinerary is being planned. But the program almost didn’t happen. Chaplain Jan Fuller proposed the idea of having a Winter Term study abroad course in Israel shortly after she came to Elon University last September, but she initially had reservations. “As I wrote the proposal for the trip, I threw my hands up in the air several times and thought, ‘What am I trying to do?’” she said.

Campus Police stop armed woman at Danieley Center

Campus security apprehended a young woman in possession of a rifle, ammunition and other weapons on Elon University's campus Sunday, according to an email sent by Dr. Smith Jackson, Vice President and Dean of Students. "Elon Campus Police averted a potentially dangerous situation today when they took into custody Alexis Gray, 18, of Holland, Pennsylvania, a student at a Pennsylvania university," Jackson said in the email. Gray's parents alerted her former boyfriend, an Elon student, that she was on her way to Elon and that they were concerned for her welfare.

Student research discovers suspected cause of plant disease

During his freshman year, now-senior Billy Impagliazzo took two classes taught by biology professor Antonio Izzo. When he got to Elon, Impagliazzo said he knew he wanted to take part in research projects. In his sophomore year, Impagliazzo went to Izzo to discuss research opportunities he had in his lab. Izzo said he believed Impagliazzo would conduct research for only a semester, but almost three years later, Impagliazzo has identified the main microbe infecting the blue curls plant and has presented his research on SURF Day.

Elon student digs into Burlington’s past after historic hotel demolition

The Rockefeller Integrated Hotel stood on Burlington’s Maple Avenue before being demolished a few weeks ago. Created by McBride “Mack” Thompson, a prominent African American entrepreneur in the Jim Crow South, the hotel was both his home and a place for Black travelers to stay somewhere safe. A single box of papers was recovered from the demolition site by a neighbor. Marshall Sears, a sophomore researching African American entrepreneurship in Petersburg, digitizes documents including those found in the demolition, as a part of his undergraduate research.
