Investigating the truth behind fifth-year seniors: One student's story

Contrary to the common belief that most fifth-year seniors stay on campus for an extra year because of academic reasons, Elon University's fifth-year senior Eddie O'Connell tells his story about staying on campus in order to stay involved. A double major in history and film, O'Connell said he has taken advantage of his last year on campus by turning around the financial troubles of his social fraternity, Alpha Chi Rho, and by serving over 50 hours of community service in his coed service fraternity, Alpha Phi Omega. Elon typically hosts around 70-80 fifth-year students each year to average 6 percent of the total population, according to Rob Springer, director of institutional research.

Meal plan changes expected to bring value and convenience to students

Elon University's dining services have altered the institution's meal plan packages, introducing two new plans, All Access and Block Meal Plans, that will begin next fall. Jeff Gazda, resident district manager of Elon's Aramark, said dining services is looking forward to the new changes as they believe it will give students the best bang for their bucks. “Our research told us that students were looking for better price/value and increased flexibility from their meal plan,” Gazda said.

Students affected most by health care bill

As the North Carolina General Assembly moves forward with plans to declare parts of the federal government's recent health care bill unconstitutional, political debate continues about the legitimacy and future of the controversial policy. Along with Florida, Virginia and other states, the assembly has stated the part of the bill requiring people to buy coverage is not founded in constitutional principles.

Tuition Rise Affects Students and their Families

There's always something else to pay for. With room and board, textbooks, meal plans and tuition payments, Elon University students and their families are persistently being presented with bills. As a follow-up piece concerning the discussions about Elon's 2011-2012 academic budget, I am writing an article this week about how the recently approved 3.98 percent increase in tuition will affect students and their families. Although the increase is the lowest its been in over a decade, students expressed concerns about the consistent, yearly price raises Elon enforces, saying each slight growth leads to more pressure to pay the bills.

Grief, loss support group provides comfort for Elon faculty, staff

Elon University associate chaplain Rev. Julie Tonnesen said loss and grief are universal emotions, but found that they can be difficult for faculty and staff to process while continuing their usual routines. “Even when we show up to work, that doesn’t mean that we get to put the rest of our lives on the back burner,” Tonnesen said. “Our grief comes with us. It’s not something we can just keep on a shelf at home.” In collaboration with Counseling Services, the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, began offering a monthly group for faculty and staff to support those affected by loss.

45 años después de los primeros casos de VIH/SIDA reportados en Estados Unidos, la lucha contra esta enfermedad está lejos de terminar, especialmente en el sur del país.
