Elon women's club Ultimate Frisbee heads to nationals

It’s the first day of class in a new semester at Elon University. The professor has every student go around and say his or her name, hometown and one interesting fact. Junior Helen Peplowski says she’s on Elon’s Ultimate Frisbee team, and a series of “oohs” and “ahhs” comes from the rest of the class. “Everyone’s usually pretty interested when you tell them,” Peplowski said.

Flipping the switch: Elon searching for energy to end skid

In the first game of the season, the Elon University baseball team led by three runs over the University of Cincinnati entering the ninth inning. The Phoenix then surrendered three runs that sent the game into extra innings, where sophomore catcher Danny Lynch provided the game-winning double. Elon head coach Mike Kennedy remarked then about the competitive spirit he saw in the dugout when his team faced adversity late in the game.

Frida Jansaker named SoCon Player of the Month

Senior Elon University women’s tennis player Frida Jansaker added to her list of accolades for the 2014 season May 6, as the Southern Conference announced that she was named Player of Month for the month of April. Jansaker, who was named to the All-SoCon second team, went 8-0 in singles and 6-2 in doubles play in the month of April.  The senior went undefeated at the SoCon Tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn., in mid-April, where Elon captured its first championship in program history. Jansaker’s performance at the tournament earned her Most Outstanding Player honors, capping off an impressive season in which she posted a record of 17-4 in singles play at the No.

Elon Poll shows Tillis in lead ahead of primaries

With primaries for the Senate and House this week, the April 2014 Elon University Poll shows North Carolina House Speaker Thom Tillis maintaining his lead for the Republican Senate nomination with more than 60 percent of respondents now recognizing his name. In February, the Elon Poll showed that only 38 percent of voters recognized Tillis’ name.

Losses put Elon in tough spot for SoCon seeding

A skid that has now become seven losses in nine games has driven the term “crunch time” to a whole new level for the Elon University baseball team. The ladder of those losses, a 7-5 shortcoming to Davidson College May 4, illustrated how tough the stretch has been for Elon. “It’s frustrating,” junior left fielder Casey Jones said.

'Active City Streets' strolls through downtown Burlington

Burlington community members and Elon students came together this weekend to promote active living. "Active City Streets" is an event to promote a life of exercise and nutritional eating. Some of the featured events were Zumba, karate demonstrations, unicycling, hula hooping, yoga classes and even a performance from Elon's Finest. But that wasn't all that was there. They also had healthy-food trucks and a farmers market with produce, flowers and foods locally grown and produced. There were 12 Elon organizations present for the event and dozens more volunteers with the Kernodle Center. The successful event fostered a lot of community development. Elon senior Mat Goldberg, who worked at the event, said why it's important for Elon students to come to Burlington events like this one. "I think we talk a lot about how Elon is the place where we belong, recognizing that Elon is our home.

Spartans down Phoenix in doubleheader

The Elon University softball team was swept by local rival University of North Carolina at Greensboro 10-2 and 10-8 in the first two games of a three-game set May 3 at UNCG Softball Park in Greensboro in what is the Phoenix’s last series before postseason play begins next week. In the first game, the Spartans used a dominant performance in the circle by senior starter Raeanne Hanks and hot bats from all nine starters to trounce the Phoenix 10-2. The Spartans began their offensive onslaught in the bottom of the first with four runs.
