Football puts out suicide prevention video

While the Family Weekend game did not go well for the Elon University football team Saturday afternoon, the Phoenix received attention around campus for something positive. The football team partnered with Active Minds — the student advocacy club that “strives to break the stigma surrounding mental illness” — to create a 40-second video that was shown on the videoboard during the first half of Saturday’s game.

Kathleen Parker, after summer controversy and student petition, to speak Oct. 4

The fall semester at Elon University has just started this, but this summer, Kathleen Parker was the catalyst for many Elon students grumbling about certain aspects of the upcoming school year— complaints that were more serious and ethically challenging than homework and exams. A planned Baird Pulitzer Prize lecture in October from Parker, a syndicated Washington Post columnist, was met with hostility among the Elon community as more than 300 students, alumni and others signed a petition asking the school to cancel the event, according to the Greensboro News and Record.

Football dominated by #14 Villanova 42-7

In a complete reversal from the previous week’s upset, the Elon University football team got shellacked by Villanova University Saturday afternoon, falling behind by 35 at half and losing the game 42-7 at Rhodes Stadium. In front of 10,424 fans — Elon’s seventh-largest crowd for Family Weekend — the Wildcats scored on all five of its first half drives, thoroughly silencing a relatively raucous Elon fanbase. “Well obviously, it was a disappointing effort in every phase of the game,” said head coach Rich Skrosky.

Bringing together the art of politics and comedy

            This week, the Elon community will have a chance to see “an amazing play that most Americans have never heard of,” according to Kevin Otos, the director of Memorandum—a play by Václav Havel and this year’s fall production.             Many people know Havel, the native of Czechoslovakia, as a politician.  He was largely opposed to the communist domination in Czechoslovakia.

​Women’s soccer wraps up nonconference play with a win

First half goals from junior defender Kendall Ballotti and freshman striker Tori Baliatico helped the Elon University women's soccer team wrap up nonconference play and bounce back from Sunday’s loss vs JMU with a 2-0 victory against South Carolina State University Thursday night at Rudd Field. Senior goalkeeper Taylor Mohr was able to record her second shutout of the season, coming up with four big saves to help her team keep the lead in her second consecutive start.

Journalism legend Bob Woodward discusses political topics at Fall Convocation

“All the President’s Men,” a book and movie documenting Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists Bob Woodward’s and Carl Bernstein's investigation of the Watergate scandal, has been nominated for Academy Awards and hailed internationally by critics. But for Woodward, the movie helped him win something else in the 1970s, too. “During that era, I could get a date on the telephone with almost anyone,” Woodward said, chuckling. “And then I would show up at the door, and the date would look, and then I would see disappointment.”

Dancers to perform first show of the season

Throughout the week, students have been stretching on stairs and doing pirouettes on the sidewalks of Global Neighborhood. Turing the heads of onlookers, they've actually gotten a sneak peek of "Dancing in the Landscape," a performing arts production that will utilize the sites of campus on Oct. 1 at noon in Love Terrance.

‘First Daughter Suite’ creates historical fantasia for audiences

From one scene to the next everyday arguments bleed into turning a first lady into a duck and killing someone with a doll. Audiences will explore the inner lives of the first ladies and daughters of United States presidents in Elon University’s production of “First Daughter Suite.” The musical, written by Michael John Lachuisa, will be performed in Roberts Studio Theatre from May 2 to 4.
