Senior acting majors host senior showcase

The members of the BFA acting Class of 2015 are taking a big step toward making their dreams a reality with their Senior Showcase, a performance event that compiles the students’ past four years of hard work and acting education. Each actor will contribute to a total of 11 monologues and six scenes.

Administration makes new plans for building projects on campus

Expect to see more construction cones around campus. The board of trustees recently approved a project to add additional facilities to the Danieley neighborhood. The new facilities will include a fitness center, various offices, a demonstrative kitchen and Einstein Bagels, which will be located next to Qdoba.

Fitness obsession just as dangerous as eating disorders

We see it every time we turn on our phones, open our laptops or watch television: the “ideal” body. This concept of unattainable beauty has plagued women and men alike for decades, causing an estimated 24 million people in the United States to suffer from disorders such as anorexia, bulimia and binge eating, according to the National Association of Anorexia Nervosa and Associated Disorders (ANAD). The majority of those suffering from these disorders are teenagers and young adults, who are far more likely to be swayed by the messages given out by me- dia outlets.

New talent adds depth to Elon women's basketball

From the opponent’s standpoint, planning to play the Elon University women’s basketball team has become easier over the last few years. It was expected that Elon’s offense would feature a steady diet of Ali Ford, Kelsey Harris or Zora Stephenson, and not much else. Enter true freshmen Shay Burnett and Malaya Johnson and sophomore transfer Essence Baucom, and gone are the days of an Elon team with limited options. “One of the things as coaches we’re most excited about is the depth,” said Charlotte Smith, who’s entering her fourth year as head coach of the Phoenix.

Elon looks to build tempo with experienced roster

The Elon University women’s basketball roster enters the 2014-2015 season largely intact from last year. The team includes the Southern Conference Freshman of the Year and sophomore forward Jennifer Rhodes, as well as a member of the Southern Conference All-Freshman team, sophomore guard Lauren Brown. This may spell trouble for the rest of the Colonial Athletic Association, as the Phoenix enters its first year of play in the new conference.

3D printers expand students’ creative horizons

Elon University senior psychology major Jenna Gilder has been seeking assistance for her undergraduate research from the Makerbot Replicator 2—a tool that speaks in a series of whirrs and chirrups. 3D printers, like the Makerbot, read a digital blueprint of a design, and the printer head forms the design by pouring heated material (usually plastic) in successive layers.  First, plastic filament, the 3D equivalent to paper, is threaded through a tube in the printer.

Drumming along to cultural beats at Elon

Boom-pat, boom-pat!   That sound is a drumbeat performed by Elon University students practicing for the “World Percussion Ensemble” concert. This semester’s performance will include instruments such as the chekere, dumdum, bongos, congas, clave, cajon and the cowbell, among others. “World Percussion Ensemble” is a one-credit course that culminates with a live performance.
