Former South African ambassador reflects on 27 years of working in diplomacy

Former ambassador Riaan Eksteen, a diplomat from South Africa, reflected on his 27 years of experience with the Elon community, before opening the floor for students and community members to ask questions. Eksteen offered advice to students. He emphasized that students can’t rely on their degrees alone. “This is why I say degrees are not directions, we need strong fundamentals; and proper tools. I learned it the hard way” Eksteen said. “I started as a young student in political science at the University of Victoria with the greens and a lot of shelves. But what I did still have was one thing and that is extreme ownership, I stopped waiting for opportunities.”

Elon’s One Phoenix committee holds first annual Phoenix Feud

Elon’s One Phoenix committee of the Student Government Association, which handles the homecoming court, hosted the first-ever Phoenix Feud. A Family Feud-like game tasking teams of two homecoming court candidates and three audience members to work together to win. The event took place at the McBride Gathering Space in the Numen Lumen Pavilion and was separated into multiple rounds, allowing many groups of candidates to play. Additional challenges were added between trivia questions to spice the game up. There was also a Kahoot as the final event to allow everyone to get to know the candidates.

Elon University’s Black Student Union struts out for fashion show

Elon University’s Black Student Union hosted their Art around the World fashion show on Sept. 12 in Alumni Gym in collaboration with Late Night Elon, taking the audience around the world without even hopping on a plane. “Truly, all of these students did amazing work. I’m so proud of our Elon community coming together especially as a student of color,” Elon freshman Ernesto Arellano-Perez said. “It's important that we have events like these to really show the diversity here at Elon.”
