Prophetic justice: Music's ability for social change

Prophetic art is often described as a deep concept. It’s the idea that something creative can hold a perspective that makes people think about the future. It’s the idea that art and music can “create both rest and unrest in the soul,” said Rev. Julian “J.Kewst” DeShazier, a pastor, activist and hip-hop artist. In music, it makes the listener actively hear and perceive a message. It can enact social change.

Elon BrainCARE hosts discussion about concussions

A day (un)exposed

“I’m so scared I want to cry.” Those are the words that I wrote to my best friend just hours before I would don the hijab for a day to stand in solidarity against Islamophobia. This year was my fourth year wearing the hijab for a day and each year was just as nerve wracking as the previous. I can’t really explain why I get so nervous and scared.

2016 SGA Election Results Announced

Senior class president Sean Barry and senior class vice president Robert Danis announced SGA's Election results this afternoon in Moseley Center. The results: The amendments to the constitution passed, 1677 YES votes, to 386 NO votes.

Musical theater season filled with agents unlike traditional job search

This week hundreds of Elon students will print their resumes, iron their best business casual, and march confidently into Alumni Gym for the annual spring Job and Internship Expo, hosted by the Student Professional Development Center (SPDC). For most students across majors and intended career paths, their job search will be a combination of job fairs, networking and submitting applications. Musical theater students take a slightly different approach.

Future McEwen Dining Hall Food Options Released

According to a White Paper from the President's Student Leadership Advisory Council, the new McEwen Dining Hall will have the motto, "A place where the Elon community will gather, engage and nourish." There will be at least five new food options in the renovated McEwen Dining Hall, expected to be complete by Fall 2017, according to Elon Dining. A new concept called, "Home & Away," is set to offer home-cooked style meals and pasta options. "Green & Grains" is a concept that is to serve meals including salads with protein, as well as other vegetarian dishes, according to the President's Student Leadership Advisory Council. A dining option called "Knead," with options similar to what students may find at Panera Bread, is also set to be a part of the renovated McEwen Dining Hall. "Clean Juice," a smoothie and cold-pressed juice location is set to be available through Elon Dining's Meal Exchange program. According to the report, Student Government Association Senators were provided with a survey on Elon Dining options.

Men’s basketball improves as CAA Tournament starts

After Feb. 25’s home loss to the College of William & Mary, a close game that left the Elon University men’s basketball team believing they could have won, head coach Matt Matheny shook his head in disbelief. It was the sixth Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) home game that Elon had lost despite leading at some point in the second half.

If you’re comfortable, you’re not trying

I recently reported on a speech about campus racism given by Lawrence Ross, author of “Blackballed: The Black and White Politics of Race on America’s Campuses.” It was a fairly routine assignment. I showed up in LaRose Digital Theatre with plenty of time to scope out some students to interview and a good seat for taking photos. It was only when I’d settled in that I realized this event was being attended, unlike most events at Elon University, by mostly African-American students and faculty. It was then that the discomfort settled in, along with the feeling that, however unwelcome that discomfort might be, it was absolutely necessary.

Student health deserves higher priority

 

Physical and mental health should always be our priority. This is something that as college students, we have heard time and time again, so much so that it seems redundant and unnecessary to even say it.

Former Elon University student arrested for sexual exploitation charge

A Burlington man, who previously attended Elon University, was arrested April 21 and charged with four counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor. Nikolaos Alexander Fotiou, 18, was taken to the Alamance County Detention Center and is being held there under no bond, as of April 24. According to a Burlington Police Department press release, the Invictus Task Force aided with the investigation.

Meet Elon University’s 2026 Lumen Prize winners

Fifteen students have been selected to receive $20,000 to support their mentored research and projects for the next two years as a part of the Lumen Prize. The 2026 Lumen Scholar winners will work closely with their mentors on their projects during their junior and senior years.
