Elon InterVarsity seeks to foster student dialogue, reflection after national reiteration

This month marks the deadline for staff members of national InterVarsity to leave the organization if they disagree with its recently reiterated theological stance against same-sex relationships, premarital sex, divorce and masturbation. The move by the national collegiate evangelical Christian ministry, which has a chapter on Elon University’s campus, created outcry in the LGBTQIA community after it was reported by Time Magazine in October. While the edict applies only to staff members — not student leaders or members — it has caused many students at Elon to try to distance itself from the national organization’s position and has prompted questions about the role of inclusivity and theological debate within the fellowship organization.

The situation is undeniably complicated. Between IV reaffirming its stance on gay marriage in no uncertain terms and Elon University’s campus-wide push for inclusivity, Elon InterVarsity (IV) is in a tough place. But so are the students in IV at Elon who look to the organization for spiritual guidance, as are the students in the greater Elon community committed to their own views of inclusivity.

As election draws to a close, so does patience

Elon University freshman Payton Barr doesn’t have a lot of social media accounts — just Instagram — but she still can’t escape this election season’s political posts. And she’s over it. “It gets kind of old,” Barr said. “People just get really aggressive about it. I don’t like to see that kind of negativity in my feed. I get sick of seeing it.” A recent Pew Research Center analysis found that more than one-third of social media users surveyed, like Barr, are sick of political content on their feeds. The study found that 37 percent of those surveyed said they were “worn out by how many political posts and discussions they see” on social media, saying they found it “stressful and frustrating” to read posts from those they disagree with.

Issues in North Carolina play vital role in national election

North Carolina’s 15 Electoral College votes may seem trivial compared to the 270 total needed to win the United States presidency, but the votes placed in the state Nov. 8 will have a significant impact in deciding the next Commander-in-Chief. Since July, campaigns for both Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton and Republican nominee Donald Trump have reflected the state’s high value, as each has made regular appearances. Clinton has even sent surrogates, including President Barack Obama, First Lady Michelle Obama and former President Bill Clinton, to energize voters.

Millennial voter turnout to play pivotal role in election

Millennials make headlines daily for social media crazes and popular trends, but on Nov. 8, they could also make headlines for their influence in the ballot box. According to a recent Pew Research Center analysis, millennials — adults born between 1981 and 1997 — are predicted to outnumber the baby boomer generation in voter turnout this election year.

Still, both candidates are vague about how they would fund their plans. I interviewed Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump on July 25 and asked him what he would do as president to address concerns of college students.

Party lines blur amid divisive 2016 election

With widespread, tense emotions directed toward Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump and Democrat presidential nominee Hillary Clinton — even from members of their respective parties — the country as a whole has seen a shift in partisan lines. Jason Husser, assistant professor of political science and policy studies and director of the Elon University Poll, has labeled this the “volcanic eruption of politics,” political party realignment occurs when large coalitions of voters switch from one party to another, along with certain groups being mobilized to vote, increasing or changing the electorate.

Elon president Leo Lambert shares his take on the election

As Elon University President Leo Lambert watched the three presidential debates with his Twitter feed pulled up, he couldn’t believe some of what he read. This national election with Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Donald Trump as presidential nominees is one of the most bizarre he has ever seen. “I think my jaw was agape a lot of the time,” Lambert said.

Men's basketball thrashes Randolph in lone exhibition game

The Elon University mens basketball team had its first outing of the fall on Tuesday night, trouncing Division III Randolph College 88-43 in an exhibition match in Alumni Gym. The Phoenix shone on both ends of the floor, dominating possession in a game that saw them shoot 53% from the field and 33% from beyond the arc.

Volleyball sweeps NC Central to end nonconference play

The Elon University volleyball team got back on the right track Tuesday night, sweeping North Carolina Central University (25-20, 25-13, 25-17) in a nonconference match at Alumni Gym. “I think this game gave us a lot of confidence going into our last two weekends in conference games," said junior outside hitter Sydney Busa.

North Carolinians rate public schools poorly in new Elon Poll

As K-12 students across North Carolina prepare for their winter break, the Elon University Poll released poll data on Dec. 17 finding that most North Carolinians gave mediocre or poor grades to public schools across the state. “The states have always had deep authority on education, but there has been more federal involvement in various years,” Director of the Elon University Poll Jason Husser said. “So we thought, well, this is the time for us to really look in depth about what do people think about North Carolina schools.”

Grief, loss support group provides comfort for Elon faculty, staff

Elon University associate chaplain Rev. Julie Tonnesen said loss and grief are universal emotions, but found that they can be difficult for faculty and staff to process while continuing their usual routines. “Even when we show up to work, that doesn’t mean that we get to put the rest of our lives on the back burner,” Tonnesen said. “Our grief comes with us. It’s not something we can just keep on a shelf at home.” In collaboration with Counseling Services, the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, began offering a monthly group for faculty and staff to support those affected by loss.
