Football can't capitalize on chances against Richmond

RICHMOND — The Elon University football team had many chances to score against No. 18 University of Richmond Saturday afternoon. But Elon could not capitalize on the chances it had offensively early, and Richmond overpowered Elon’s defense en route to a 27-14 victory. We built a hole against a very good opponent in Richmond,” head coach Rich Skrosky said.

Phoenix sinks Northeastern 2-1 in CAA play

The No. 13 ranked Elon University men’s soccer team returned to winning ways with a 2-1 victory over Northeastern University, on a Wednesday afternoon at Rudd Field.  “We played well, the second half particularly we created some really good chances,” said head coach Chris little.

Women's soccer scores early, often in win over Francis Marion

The Elon University women's soccer team scored early and often Tuesday night, defeating Francis Marion University 6-0 in Florence, S.C., in a late non-conference matchup. Senior defender Mel Insley got the Phoenix on the board in the 14th minute, scoring her third goal of the season, on all free kicks.

Men’s soccer forward returns to family home

When senior forward Cooper Vandermaas-Peeler arrived on Elon University’s campus in January 2015 he wasn’t alone.  The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill transfer not only joined eager new teammates but also enjoyed a homecoming of sorts with close friends and family. Though, Cooper has a new role for the Phoenix.

Working hard not to be noticed

The Elon University football team has had struggles on offense this season, as they currently rank 120th out of 123 Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) teams in total offense. The inability to move the ball on offense has given the special teams unit plenty of opportunities.

The past two seasons have told different stories for the Elon University women’s soccer team. The 2013 version scored twice as many goals as they gave up, scoring 56 goals and allowing 28 in the 22 matches the team played.

Volleyball's valiant effort not enough Sunday

The Elon University volleyball team fell to the Tigers of Towson University 3-1 (14-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-18). The loss gives the Phoenix its second consecutive defeat at home in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) play this season.  "Our offense is getting better and better, and it's nice to see," said head coach Mary Tendler after the match.

Elon softball strikes out hunger in Alamance County

Most college students spend their Friday evenings going out and hanging with friends. For members of the Elon softball team, they spent their evening at Allied Churches of Alamance County handing out food to the those in need. Patrons lined up outside the Burlington shelter anxiously awaiting a dinner featuring turkey and cheese sandwiches, salad and various tasty desserts.

Hurricane Joaquin forces postponement of soccer matches

The impending rain coming from Hurricane Joaquin has forced postponements of matches for both the Elon University men's and women's soccer teams this weekend. The next match for the women's team is 7 p.m. Monday at Francis Marion University. The men will not be in action again until 7 p.m. Oct. 10, against Lipscomb University.
