Men's basketball reflects on strong regular season

Even though the Elon University men’s basketball team is looking ahead and preparing for the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament, head coach Matt Matheny took some time after Saturday’s 81-59 win over the University of Delaware to think big-picture. In its third season in the CAA, the Phoenix finished the regular season 18-13 overall and 10-8 in conference play, good for a tie for fourth place in one of the best mid-major conferences in the country.

Men's basketball drops 2OT thriller to Northeastern 105-104

In the wildest game of the Elon University men’s basketball season, sophomore forward Tyler Seibring’s jumper at the buzzer couldn’t fall a second time, as the Phoenix lost to Northeastern University 105-104 in double overtime Thursday night. With 2.2 seconds left, Seibring — who sent the game to overtime by making a similar shot on a similar play — caught sophomore guard Dainan Swoope’s inbound pass, pump-faked, and bumped into senior guard/forward Jimmy Marshall, but missed the shot, leaving Elon listening for a whistle that never came. “It was similar,” said Elon head coach Matt Matheny.

No-hitter signals Welhaf's comeback

The Elon University baseball team’s Saturday afternoon game against Longwood University was still in progress, the unspeakable performance of redshirt junior pitcher Robbie Welhaf nearing completion. And yet, even though there was no guarantee Welhaf would be able to finish off Elon’s first no-hitter since joining Division I, head coach Mike Kennedy almost was overcome with emotions. “[Assistant coach] Robbie [Huffstetler] and I are sitting here and I’m trying to make sure I don’t bust out in tears because you’re happy for a guy that sticks with it,” Kennedy said.

Elon's Dawkins stepping up on Saturdays

With a few minutes to wind down and finally control his heart beat, Elon University head men’s basketball coach Matt Matheny couldn’t stop his quick laugh when recalling the final play of the Phoenix’s game Saturday night. Elon up by one, four seconds left, and the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) leaders University of North Carolina at Wilmington got the ball to Preseason CAA Player of the Year redshirt senior guard Chris Flemmings on the right wing. Women's basketball falters in 4th in loss at JMU

HARRISONBURG, Va. — Just when it seemed like the Elon University women’s basketball team would finally avenge its demons and defeat conference kingpin James Madison University for the first time in school history, it all fell apart, as Elon crumbled down the stretch and lost to the Dukes 61-54 Sunday afternoon in Harrisonburg, Virginia. Elon took a 44-41 lead into the fourth quarter and made the first basket of the frame to push its lead up to five, but James Madison’s stagnant offense finally clicked again, rolling through the Phoenix on a 16-2 run to jump from down by five to up by nine. Elon’s offense turned anemic as the Dukes heated up, turning the ball over six times in the fourth while only making three shots.
