Development of Jewish Studies program progressing

Jewish life on campus will get a bit more academic this year with the arrival of Geoffrey Claussen, the first professor of Jewish Studies. Part of Claussen's responsibility this year will be developing the parameters for what a Jewish Studies program would look like at Elon University. A main component of the task is developing the courses that will provide the foundation of the program.

Founder of Elon Academy aims to increase access to education

Each year, Deborah Long must complete what she calls a "terrible task." Working with a team to review about 100 applications from low-income high school freshmen in the Alamance County community, she must select about 60 to invite in for interviews before eventually selecting 26 to join other scholars in the Elon Academy. "It's really hard, so hard," she said. Since 2007, Long has served as the director of the Elon Academy, a college-access program she helped develop.

University librarian reflects on 15 years at Elon prior to departure

This time next year, there will be one fewer familiar face around the shelves of Belk Library. Kate Hickey, dean of Library Services and university librarian, has announced she will retire at the end of this academic year, her 15th working at Elon University. Hickey arrived at Elon in 1996, just after the architects for the new library had been selected.

Lambert joins SGA for discussion of diversity issues on campus

President Leo Lambert joined SGA Thursday night to update the organization on the progress and plans for the Elon Commitment projects, while also addressing the recent incidents on campus involving diversity. A key theme was a question raised Tuesday at College Coffee by some of the 2,500 people in attendance - now what? Lambert first said that people need to use their heads and that the actions that occurred this week were thoughtless. "Think about the consequences of those actions on your future," he said.

Former US deputy attorney general speaks about the line between politics and policy

David Ogden, former deputy attorney general of the United States, spoke Thursday night at Elon University about his experiences in government and the moral gray areas that result from interpreting the law through political lenses. Ogden's speech was titled "Justice at the Intersection of Law and Politics," and he gave several examples of cases in which the line between politics and policy has been challenging to draw. Lawyers who decide to dedicate their careers to being civil servants for the United States, its citizens their clients, are taking on important roles, Ogden said.

Freshman class pledges to uphold Honor Code in annual ceremony

The more than 1,400 freshmen on campus became the latest in thousands to pledge to uphold the Elon University Honor Code at the 6th annual Call to Honor Ceremony. Held this morning in the Academic Village, administrators and SGA representatives emphasized the four hallmarks of the university's Honor Code – honesty, integrity, responsibility and respect. In an introduction to the ceremony, Darris Means, associate director of the Elon Academy and a 2005 alumnus, emphasized the responsibility of the class to uphold the foundation laid by more than 30,000 alumni. "The reputation of a university campus can be affected by the actions of just a small group or even a single person," he said. Means said the ongoing issue with diversity on campus has reminded him there is still much to improve upon.

Special college coffee encourages discussion of discrimination on campus

In response to multiple reported incidents of racial discrimination over the past week, Elon University hosted a special College Coffee on Tuesday to address issues surrounding diversity on campus. President Leo Lambert spoke to students, faculty and staff about embracing inclusion, along with honor, integrity and respect, as the foundation of the Elon University community.

Grief, loss support group provides comfort for Elon faculty, staff

Elon University associate chaplain Rev. Julie Tonnesen said loss and grief are universal emotions, but found that they can be difficult for faculty and staff to process while continuing their usual routines. “Even when we show up to work, that doesn’t mean that we get to put the rest of our lives on the back burner,” Tonnesen said. “Our grief comes with us. It’s not something we can just keep on a shelf at home.” In collaboration with Counseling Services, the Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life, began offering a monthly group for faculty and staff to support those affected by loss.

45 años después de los primeros casos de VIH/SIDA reportados en Estados Unidos, la lucha contra esta enfermedad está lejos de terminar, especialmente en el sur del país. Según los datos más recientes de los Centros para el Control y la Prevención de Enfermedades, el sur representó el 52% de todos los diagnósticos de VIH en Estados Unidos en 2023.
