Physical Plant employee shares story as unsung hero

Tessie Goins, a custodian on the Physical Plant team at Elon University, does it all. Goins always goes where the action is, and she can often be found cleaning up after events in Moseley, wiping down tables in Koury Business Center and attending to the bathrooms in Colonnades. "Just anywhere I go, if on my way, even if it's not nothing that I'm supposed to do, if you see it, it's the right thing to do," Goins said.

Offense comes late in Kennedy's 600th win for Elon

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Things looked bleak for the Elon University baseball team at the plate through six innings against Wofford College. That is, until one pitch in the seventh changed everything. Junior first baseman Tyler McVicar blasted a 2-1 pitch over the wall in left field for a three-run home run, providing the spark Elon needed for a 12-2 win over the Terriers. “We needed that,” senior Sebastian Gomez said.

King's home run lifts Elon over Wofford

After a seesaw fifth inning, it was a two-run home run by junior designated hitter Chris King in the eighth inning that gave the Elon University baseball team a 10-9 win over Wofford College April 11 in Spartanburg, S.C. With a runner on first and two outs, King took a 1-0 pitch over the wall in left field to give Elon a 10-8 lead that would be enough for the win.

A recent shooting at Fort Hood in Texas left three dead and 16 wounded before the shooter turned the gun on himself, fueling a debate on gun control and mental health on military bases. Specialist Ivan Lopez bought a .45 caliber handgun before bringing the weapon onto the base, violating military protocol because the weapon was not registered there.

In a world where an NFL team name perpetuates a 24-hour debate, organizations are kicked off college campuses for themed parties being “insensitive,” and New York City school boards try to ban the word “dinosaur” for fear of offending those who do not believe in evolution, political correctness, or “being PC” has gone way too far. Political correctness deems certain topics, ideas, expressions and even symbols off-limits.

Indiana Pacers in deep trouble as playoffs near

When the 2014 NBA playoffs begin in just over a week, the Miami Heat will be looking to win its third NBA title in as many years.  The Heat has dominated the landscape of professional basketball over the past few seasons, but last year showed signs of hope that another team could topple Miami and its “Big Three.” Fast forward to early this season, and things are looking good for the Indiana Pacers.  With Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls sidelined by yet another season-ending knee injury, the Pacers were automatically considered to be Miami’s greatest threat.  Led by Paul George and Roy Hibbert, Indiana started the season 19-3 after an emotional win over the Heat Dec.
