Back to basics, football faces Furman

Three straight losses have left the Elon University football team in a hole with two games left against plus-.500 teams. Head coach Jason Swepson took the bye week to work on the essentials. "We did a lot of individual work and going back to the basics," Swepson said. That included not turning the ball over, tackling and blocking, he said. The Phoenix, 4-5 overall and 2-4 in the Southern Conference face Furman University in Greenville, S.C.

Volleyball team fighting for playoff spot

Thanks in no small part to Georgia Southern University, the Elon University volleyball team's playoff odds took a turn for the better this weekend. While the Phoenix was busy sweeping its match against the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, the Eagles put a downer on Western Carolina University's Senior Night, helping the Phoenix get to within a game and a half of the Southern Conference North Division's final playoff spot. The weekend couldn't have started off worse for the Phoenix.

Nightmare in Happy Valley

Joe Paterno should be glad he's 84. At least now he can provide a senility defense if somebody brings up the fact that his statement contradicts information in the grand jury indictment of former Penn State University defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky. Paterno can also take solace in knowing that after the Sandusky scandal inevitably leads to Paterno's resignation/termination as head coach that he can say he coached for 62 years under the façade of doing things the right way. This is the type of thing that stains a legacy.

Penn State's decisions lead to chaos

By Adam Lawson When Vice President of the Pennsylvania State University Board of Trustees’ John Surma announced that Joe Paterno would no longer be the head coach of the Nittany Lions, an audible gasp was heard in the Penn State hotel. Journalism, an institution known for its objectivity, seemingly lost its way Wednesday night when a few students found their way into the Board of Trustees’ press conference.  Surma revealed the news.  Then, the conference was hijacked. Few intelligent questions were asked.  Why didn’t you allow Paterno to go out with dignity?

'No' means no, but interpretation of effective consent differs at Elon

Consent is sexy. The head nod, the squeeze of the hand, the wink. According to Elon University policy, these simple signs can't be interpreted as effective consent in the absence of a verbal, active "yes." But the charges assigned — or not assigned — to students accused of nonconsensual sexual acts don't always reflect what is mandated by university policy. On Elon's Sexual and Relationship Violence Awareness and Response website, effective consent is defined as an active, verbal, uncoerced "yes" in the absence of substances such as alcohol and is required at each stage of sexual advancement. Effective consent is clearly stated in the student handbook as a necessity for students to proceed physically in accordance with the Honor Code.
