Volleyball team returns to Elon as tournament co-champions

After dropping its first match of the Butler Tournament to host Butler University, the Elon University volleyball team rallied throughout the weekend to come back and become co-champions of the tournament and looks to use its momentum this weekend, starting with a game against Campbell University. The Phoenix started the doubleheader portion of the tournament Saturday morning against Central Michigan University.

New country, new expectations

From the time he started playing soccer at age four, freshman forward Thorsten Pacher knew he wanted to continue playing the sport and be part of a soccer program at a university in the United States. Now, he's getting that chance. Pacher, a native of Rottenmann, Austria, has been playing soccer for 13 years and said he enjoys the sport even though it isn't popular in Austria. "Skiing is more popular in my country, but I started playing soccer with my friends," Pacher said.

Volleyball takes 11-4 record into SoCon play

Despite one loss while hosting the Elon Phoenix Classic Sept. 16-17, the Elon University volleyball team has completed its out of conference schedule and looks to begin its second season: Southern Conference play. After taking the first two matches of the Elon Phoenix Classic, it looked like the Elon Phoenix might find itself with a 12-3 record after a three-game sweep of Campbell University, North Carolina Central University and Winthrop University.

A look back: Seniors relive last four seasons

At season's end, the women's soccer team will have a void to fill. There are only two seniors on the squad, but coach Chris Neal says the experience and leadership will be difficult to fill after the graduation of defender Andrea Keller and midfielder Noell McCain. "They are the best human beings I've ever coached and they are great role models," Neal said.

Football prepares for final test before SoCon

Following a 48-10 victory against Concord University Sept. 10, Elon University head football coach Jason Swepson looked apprehensive. Although the team won by a decisive margin, Swepson said he was already looking ahead, knowing there is a lot of practice needed before the Phoenix travels to North Carolina Central University to face the Eagles Saturday. Men's soccer anxious to begin Southern Conference play

The Elon University men's soccer team fought its way back from a 2-0 deficit against Old Dominion University and forced the nation's 11th-ranked team into an overtime period before losing 3-2 in an exciting finish Saturday night at Rudd Field. The comeback comes just one game before the team must begin its Southern Conference schedule. After trailing at halftime, the Phoenix came back to tie the game with goals by senior midfielder James Carroll and freshman defender Tommy Allen.

Play abroad aids men's basketball team in growth, unity

After Matt Matheny was hired in March 2009 as Elon University's 17th head basketball coach, he and athletic director Dave Blank discussed an innovative idea. "When we were discussing the possibility of this position back in 2009, we talked about a lot of things," said Matheny, who became the new coach after serving 16 years as an assistant at Davidson College.

Defining Diversity: Campus grapples with response to discrimination

Although diversity on campus is now at its highest level since Elon University became an institution, discrimination has not disappeared, and the campus community's commitment to responding to discrimination is nothing new. When Elon College's marching band stopped at a restaurant in Raleigh on the way back from a football game in 1963, the restaurant owner told Glenda Phillips, the first black student to attend Elon College, that she was not allowed to enter.

High levels of mildew found in Hook, students evacuated to off-campus apartment complex

Sixteen freshmen were evacuated from Hook Residence Hall Saturday morning as a precautionary measure after an elevated level of mildew was detected in the air. The air quality in the building had been tested at least twice per week since the beginning of the school year, when eight freshmen boys were reassigned prior to move-in weekend because of severe water damage in their suite, according to Angel Garcia, assistant director of Residence Life in East Area. "I know it's an inconvenience and we understand that," Garcia said.

Elon University enrollment drops below 6,000 for first time since 2018

Elon University’s undergraduate enrollment has dipped below 6,000 students for the first time since spring 2018, according to the Spring Registrar’s Report released Feb. 23. This decrease comes after an 11.6% drop in enrollment for the class of 2029. Part of this pattern can be attributed to the “demographic cliff,” the decreasing supply of college students from a falling national birth rate that began in 2007. The total undergraduate enrollment of 5,974 is a decrease from the 6,226 students the university reported in the spring of 2025. It’s also roughly 200 fewer students than the 6,191 reported in fall 2025. Though overall student numbers dropped, there was also an increase of 523 seniors, compared to the fall report.

Mebane City Council to expand offices, parking for staff

The Mebane City Council purchased a dentist's office and parking lot for $325,000 in a unanimous vote. The property is located across from the City Hall. North Carolina requires local governments to keep a minimum reserve — called a fund balance — equal to 8% of their annual general expenses.
