As NCAA, ACC pull championship events from state because of HB2, Elon could see impact

As North Carolina’s House Bill 2 continues to linger in scrutiny, Elon University may see an impact come to its campus and its state through athletics. This wekk, both the NCAA and the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) pulled its neutral-site championship events out of North Carolina this week, with the NCAA pulling four Division I championship events and the ACC pulling all eight of its neutral-site championships. Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) commissioner Joe D’Antonio released a statement Wednesday, saying that the conference is “monitor[ing] all aspects of a conference championship event being held in the state of North Carolina.” “At all CAA championship events our goal is to provide an environment in which our fans, student-athletes, administrators and all people involved in the event are treated fairly and in a non-discriminatory manner,” D’Antonio said.

"Can I Kiss You?" sparks conversation about consent

SPARKS Peer Education hosted “Can I Kiss You?,” a discussion about consent headed by speaker and award-winning author Mike Domitrz, Tuesday, Sept. 13 in McKinnon Hall. The event was billed as “a fun-filled look at relationships and consent,” and covered topics ranging from recognizing and stopping sexual assault to how to respond if someone says, “No,” to the question, “Can I kiss you?”

EDITORIAL: The Presidential Task Force on Social Climate and Out-of-Class Engagement heard from many students

 

In the editorial published on September 7, 2016, Make conversations more accessible to all leaders on campus — not just ‘the most involved,’ the editorial staff addressed the issue of hyper-involved students holding leadership positions in administrative-level forums about change on campus. While we maintain that the administration needs to seek out voices of less involved students, our editorial glazed over facts pertaining to the many steps taken by the Presidential Task Force on Social Climate and Out-of-Class Engagement.

It didn’t matter if you knew Derek Winton, the fifth-year senior at Elon who died early Saturday morning. The loss of a community member — less than three weeks into our academic year — is painful for all. And for a campus that often moves too quickly into our own organizational silos, it’s important for all of us to stop, slow down and be there for each other in this time of grieving.

Runoff for vice president and 2nd consecutive African-American president highlight Class of 2020 SGA elections

Elon University SGA Executive President senior Kyle Porro had to participate in a runoff election to win the presidency last spring, and he said he “feels really bad” for the current Class of 2020 vice presidential candidates — the next 24 hours are going to be “stressful.” Almost 800 votes were cast in the SGA Class of 2020 election, and freshmen Konnor Porro and Xavier Bryant each earned 349 votes for vice president.

Elon University’s volleyball team (9-2) is off to the best start to a season since 2009 thanks to a stellar performance last weekend at the Elon Phoenix Classic. The Phoenix went a perfect 4-0 in the tournament, outscoring opponents 12-3 in sets to extend its winning streak to six.

Senior Zoe Ross-Nash was called No-Ass Ross-Nash throughout her childhood and high school, so she tore up paper and started a movement to fight her and others insecurities. "I’m going to rip that up and just love me for my body and love myself for my body, so goodbye, No-Ass Ross-Nash,” Ross-Nash explains in a January Facebook video as she tears up a piece of paper with her long-held insecurity written on it.

Elon remembers 9/11

The Truitt Center for Religious and Spiritual Life held a 9/11 Interfaith Service Sunday to honor those who died during the September 11 terrorist attacks 15 years ago. The service started with music and multi-faith prayers and reflections led by Muslim Life coordinator Imam Shane Atkinson, Reverend Adam Shoemaker of Episcopal Church of the Holy Comforter, Associate Chaplan of Protestant Life Reverend Dr. Joel Harter and Associate Chaplin of Jewish Life Rabbi Meir Goldstein.

Led by terrific defense from sophomore outside hitter Kam Terry and relentless offensive attacks from a host of players, Elon defeated Gardner-Webb University 3-1 (25-20, 25-19, 22-25, 25-15).

Football falters at Charlotte after first quarter success

CHARLOTTE — A near-perfect first quarter was followed by three quarters of underwhelming play for the Elon University football team, as the Phoenix lost to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte 47-14 Saturday night in Charlotte. Elon led 7-0 after a quarter thanks to four three-and-outs and a 12-play, 99-yard drive.
