Reporter Douglas Foster has spent the last eight years writing his book, After Mandela: The Struggle for Freedom in Post-Apartheid South Africa, about the situation in South Africa since the end of the Apartheid through the eyes of six young South Africans.

I will miss meandering through the open, European-esque plazas of Old Quito. I will miss the walks through the dozens of parks teeming with joggers, dogs, futbol players and the occasional couple. I will miss the sound of Spanish rattled off at lightning speed, the friendliness of Quito’s people, the food and the stunning scenery that surrounded me at every turn.

President Barack Obama announced during a speech at North Carolina State University Wednesday that a "Next Generation Power Electronics Innovation Institute" will be built in hopes in strengthening U.S. manufacturing. This is the first of the three such institutes to be announced in the coming weeks. The Innovation Institute will work to develop wide band gap semiconductors, the next generation of energy-efficient chips and devices.

Meanwhile, in Israel, airport security relies heavily on racial profiling and intense personal scrutiny by highly trained security agents who have extensive military training.

An arctic blast hits Elon from Monday night into Tuesday, just in time for students to begin classes. The National Weather Advisory released a Wind Chill Advisory for tonight, Jan. 6 until Tuesday morning, Jan. 7. The cold arctic air mass and breezy winds are expected to result in wind chills of 0 to -10 degrees, according to the National Weather Service.

The 2013 season was a massive disappointment for the Washington Nationals. After all, the team projected to win the World Series did not even qualify for the Major League Baseball postseason. All year long, injuries (and the lack of production from Dan Haren) plagued the pitching staff and strongly inhibited the team’s progress.
