Updated as of 10:55 a.m. March 16 to include information about class cancelations.
The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for Alamance County that will be in effect until 2 p.m. March 16.
This watch comes as part of a big storm movement coming into Alamance County on March 16. In an email sent to students on March 15, Vice President of Student Life Jon Dooley wrote that tornado watches mean that weather conditions are considered favorable for a tornado.
Dooley said if a tornado is spotted and a warning is issued, E-Alert notifications will be sent to students and the outdoor sirens will sound.
In another email sent to students by Dooley at 10:36 a.m., he announced that in-person meetings on Elon’s campus for classes March 16 between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. are canceled.
The possibility of high winds is expected to pass through between 11 am and 2 pm.
Dooley wrote that people are encouraged to remain indoors as the storm passes through, with high winds that can result in falling branches and limbs.
Students should check with instructors for further information about alternative plans.
Dooley also wrote that directors of programs in Greensboro, Charlotte, or other national campus locations will communicate directly with affected students and faculty about any weather-related impact to operations and classes.
In the event of a tornado, Dooley said all campus buildings have shelter locations. He said to go to a basement or interior ground-floor room of some kind without windows.
