Martha Smith-Trout, professor emerita of English, died Tuesday at 92.
Smith-Trout taught at Elon University from 1963 until her retirement in 1993. During that time, she served as Chair of the English Department and of the Academic Council.
She also helped with the creation of both the then-Communications Department and the Women's Studies program.
Smith-Trout also spent several semesters in London with Elon students as part of the Study Abroad program.
Services are scheduled for 4 p.m. Nov. 6 at First Presbyterian Church in Burlington. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Elon University, First Presbyterian Church of Burlington or the Women's Resource Center of Burlington.
