After hearing arguments last week, the Town of Elon Board of Aldermen passed a motion permitting construction on the area of land next to Skid's Restaurant, taking 30 parking spaces away from the Oaks Neighborhood lot in the process.

The land is currently owned by Elon University, and the construction will take away 30 parking spaces from the Oaks Neighborhood parking lot. It will use those spaces for the shops and residential area that is to be built. The university has already committed to supplying those thirty spaces said John McDonald, owner of EDG Properties, which is undertaking the project.

The proposed construction, tentatively named Park Place at Elon, will be four stories tall, in compliance with new zoning laws passed last month. The area will also be mixed-use with commercial shops on the first floor with shops and residential use in the three floors above the shops.

Construction is slated to begin in November, but may take longer depending on approval by the Town of Elon Technical Review Committee.

Town Planner Sean Tencer said that the construction plans would have to be approved by the TRC, taken back to EDG Properties to rework designs to comply with the TRC’s requirements, and then reviewed again. That process will continue until all parties approve of the construction designs.
