In the final game of a three-game road swing, the Elon University women’s lacrosse team was defeated by Campbell University 11-8 March 15 in Buies Creek, N.C.

The contest was mostly a game of runs — Campbell used a 7-0 run in the first half to take control of the game, though Elon would answer with a 4-0 run of its own.

The host Camels scored first when sophomore attack Erica Hitch found the back of the net at the 16:56 mark in the first half. Elon grabbed its lone lead of the game with back-to-back scores from freshman attack Sloane Kessler at the 12:45 and 11:50 marks of the first half.

From there, Campbell went on its 7-0 run. Senior midfield Taelar Arrington had three of the Camels’ seven goals in the run, which lasted less than five minutes from 11:41 to 6:52 of the first half. Trailing 8-2, Kessler completed her hat trick by scoring with 1:12 left before intermission.

The Phoenix used the momentum from Kessler’s goal to notch the first three scores of the second half. Kessler scored at the 29:16 mark of the half, and freshman midfield Olivia Fernandez scored at 28:30. After freshman attack Anna Vitton scored at 25:54, the Phoenix trailed 8-6. Campbell answered with two straight goals, one each from Hitch and Arrington. Vitton would score with 11:03 left for Elon, but the Phoenix was not able to complete the comeback.

Elon fell to 3-5 with the loss, Campbell improved to 3-2. The Phoenix will be back in action when it hosts Longwood University in a makeup game Wednesday, March 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Rhodes Stadium.
