The Elon University women’s track and field team opened its 2014 indoor season by competing at the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C. on Saturday, Jan. 11.

In the meet, the Phoenix had a number of strong individual performances. Sophomore Sydney Griffin won her heat in the 60-meter hurdles event with a time of 9.08 seconds, but did not qualify for the finals. Finishing fourth in her heat was sophomore Jennifer Esposito at 9.25 seconds.

During the heats for the 60-meter dash, sophomore Simone Jackson (7.93), Sophomore Bria Turner (8.02) and senior Kayleigh Birks (8.28) all finished for Elon.

The Phoenix gained a team point when Esposito finished eighth in the 400-meter run with a time of 58.54 seconds. Sophomore Jennifer Pash finished 9th at 58.81 and senior Bria Bell clocked in at 59.42 seconds, good for 14th place. Esposito and Pash’s times were fourth- and fifth-best in school history.

Elon finished third, fourth and fifth in the 3,000-meter run, with sophomore Sabina Bains (10:57.55), senior Kylie Womack (10:58.40) and redshirt sophomore Emily Dunne (11:01.68) leading the Phoenix.

Griffin finished 10th in the 200-meter run with a time of 25.72 seconds. Birks competed in the weight throw and finished with a personal record of 47’ 1”.

Additionally, sophomore Megan Kirschling finished fifth in the high jump, clearing at 5’3.75”.

The Phoenix will return to competition next weekend at the Liberty Open in Lynchburg, Va.
