The Pendulum has learned Elon University head football coach Jason Swepson has named junior Mike Quinn starting quarterback for the team’s Aug. 31 opener at Georgia Tech.
The Wayne, N.J. resident was originally part of a three-way battle for the starting job along with sophomore Trevor Vasey and redshirt freshman John Loughery. Vasey was moved to a wide receiver earlier in preseason camp, leaving only Quinn and Loughery to compete for the starting job.
As a backup to Thomas Wilson in 2012, Quinn appeared in nine of Elon’s 11 games. He passed for 115 yards while completing 20-of-29 pass attempts for two touchdowns.
Since spring practice, Swepson had maintained he would name a starter “ten days before the opener,” the Phoenix’s second straight Labor Day weekend contest against an Atlantic Coast Conference team.
