Hanif Abdurraqib says to embrace uncertainty, find meaning in present

Hanif Abdurraqib believes one of the most important things students can do is fail. The author and poet spoke to Elon students about basketball, community and success as the Common Reading Lecturer Sept. 29 in Alumni Gym. Abdurraqib’s book, “There’s Always This Year: On Basketball and Ascension,” was selected as Elon’s 2026 Common Reading for freshmen. For college students who are uncertain about their futures, Abdurraqib said not knowing what comes next is not something to fear.

Elon men’s soccer defeated the University of South Carolina Upstate 3-1 Sept. 29 in an electric match that elevates the Phoenix to a 6-2-2 record for the season. The Phoenix hit the home field flying high after a 1-0 road win against Duke University on Sept. 25. The Phoenix next play on the road against the College of William & Mary on Oct. 3.
