Interim Chief of Police Doug Dotson announced the release of the 2026 Annual Safety Report in an email to the Elon University community Sept. 29. The report includes information about building safety on Elon’s main campus, Elon Law in Greensboro and Elon in Charlotte. It details campus safety efforts and statistics about crime and fire incidents between 2023 and 2025.

Rape and Sexual Assault

Cases of rape and sexual assault increased since last year’s report. In 2025, there were eight reported rape cases, up from one in 2024. Cases are still down from 15 in 2023.

Reported cases of fondling, described as the unconsensual touching of another person’s private parts, also increased from six in 2024 to seven in 2025. There were three reported cases in 2023.

Liquor and Drug Law Violations

Liquor and drug law violations both increased. Liquor law violations referred for disciplinary action increased from 171 in 2024 to 194 in 2025. However, liquor law arrests decreased from 12 to three.

Drug law violations referred for disciplinary action increased from 26 in 2024 to 46 in 2025. There were nine drug law arrests in 2025, up slightly from seven in 2024.

Domestic violence, dating violence, stalking and hazing

There were four reported instances of domestic violence on Elon’s campus in 2025, three of which were reported to happen in residence facilities. There were no reports of domestic violence in 2023 or 2024.

In 2025, eight instances of dating violence were reported, up from six in 2024 and four in 2023. 

Stalking numbers remained the same from 2024 to 2025, with five instances being reported. 

There were only two reports of hazing on campus in 2025. 

Weapons laws

Weapons laws violations increased from a single arrest in 2024 to four in 2025.

None of the arrests in 2025 were reported to student conduct, according to the report.

Hate crimes

The safety report notes that there were two reported hate crimes that took place on the university’s main campus between 2023 and 2025.

Fire statistics

According to the fire statistics chart, there were two reported fires in on-campus residential facilities in 2025, one in Danieley Center Apartment B and one in East C, both attributed to cooking. A $94 fine was issued for one of the fires.
