Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation hosts language revitalization conference, builds community

Elon University’s department of Native American and Indigenous Studies held an Indigenous language revitalization conference in LaRose Commons on Nov. 20, filling the space with open discussion and community building. The conference was in partnership with the Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation and led by assistant professor of Native American and Indigenous Studies and professor of the Yesa:sahį language revitalization course Corey Roberts. Chief of the Occaneechi Band of the Saponi Nation Tony Hayes shared the significance language has for indigenous communities. “It identifies you as a person, it identifies your culture, it identifies traditions,” Hayes said. “And the language brings all of that together.”

Government shutdown has rippling effect on local North Carolina food banks

On Oct. 1 2025, the United States government failed to pass a federal budget bill causing this government to shut down and in turn pausing federal nutritional assistance programs. The shutdown has now reached 41 days, a historic length for the United States. On Nov. 10 the Senate passed a budget bill to reopen the government. The bill will be sent to the House of Representatives to be voted on. “We're starting to actually get into school lunches. If you really delve into SNAP and the funding sources,” Jai Baker, executive director of Allied Churches of Alamance County said. “Not only are we talking about food stamps, we're talking about residual effects.”

Gala Latina: Más Que Una Historia empowers the Elon Latine community

Colorful decor, music and laughter filled LaRose Student Commons at the annual Gala Latina. The event was more than just your average gala of people sitting and talking, it was vibrant and lively, full of community bonding and celebration of achievement. Going on its ninth year, the Gala Latina is the closing event El Centro hosts for Hispanic Heritage Month. Since the Gala’s inception, it has created a space for Latine students to come together and share in one another's accomplishments, heritage, and community. Elon University freshman Kimberly Barrera-Paredes said this event highlights Elon’s Latine community. “It really shows the community we have here,” Barrera-Paredes said.
