Curling's popularity grows in North Carolina

The Winter Olympics may have wrapped up in Sochi recently, but one of its sports is still going strong in the local area. Curling became a Winter Olympic sport in 1998 and continues to grow in popularity around the United States. The winter sport involves two teams of four sliding a stone across the ice into four concentric rings.

Police charge man in indecent exposure case

Elon University Police arrested a 31-year-old male Tuesday with indecent exposure following an incident that occurred at the intersection of O'Kelly and Haggard Avenue. According to an Elon University Police report, Colin Michael Mahoney was arrested at his residence in Chapel Hill on Feb.

McEwen Dining Hall supervisor thrives in new location

There's a new face in McEwen Dining Hall. Chef Linda Loucurrie transferred from working in Lakeside, Biscuitville and Winter Garden Cafe to overseeing McEwen Dining Hall as a supervisor and cook. According to Dining Services Marketing Manager Kate Nelson, Dining Services relocates employees to give them new exposure in their job roles and to keep them interested. In Loucurrie's new domain, that plan is working.

Reload, not rebuild: so far, so good for Elon baseball

When Elon University head baseball coach Mike Kennedy was asked about the 17 new players on his 2014 team, he refused to say that they were part of a rebuilding year. Instead, Kennedy said that his team went out to “reload” for a run at a fifth Southern Conference regular season or third Southern Conference tournament championship.

Phoenix continuing to find consistency

Twelve games into its season, the Elon University softball team has shown signs of great potential. At the same time, there have been flashes of inconsistency. The Phoenix went its first four games without losing, going 3-0-1 at the Charleston Southern Tournament while averaging more than eight runs per game.

Elon searching for right lineup entering SoCon play

With Southern Conference play right around the corner, the Elon University women’s tennis team is still trying to find the perfect lineup combination.  The Phoenix has worked all eight players on the roster into the lineup this season, all part of the plan to be ready for conference play beginning March 1. One staple of the lineup over the past few seasons has been the doubles pairing of seniors Jordan Johnston and Frida Jansaker.  Heading into the spring season, the two had a doubles record of 42-4, a testament to their chemistry.  To start the season, Johnston and Jansaker were paired together at No.

Knockout Perez bursts onto Elon music scene

At the beginning of this year a new band hit the Elon University music scene, and although they are young, Knockout Perez is making a big splash. “The first time we practiced together earlier in this school year we instantly realized this was going to be insanely fun,” said junior Dylan Fitchett, lead guitar and vocals.

Leathers' clutch hit pushes Elon past UNCW

Elon University junior Wil Leathers had a feeling he would be pinch-hitting in the eighth inning for the Phoenix baseball team. Elon coach Mike Kennedy knew a fastball would be thrown to him at some point. That prior knowledge led to a bloop single into left field from Leathers, scoring senior second baseman Sebastian Gomez and giving the Phoenix a 3-2 win over the University of North Carolina at Wilmington Feb.

Three Elon students arrested on drug charges

Elon Police arrested three Elon students on drug charges last week. The three arrests were unrelated.According to the Elon Police, former Elon Football Linebacker, Jake Elliott, faces a felony charge for possession of cocaine and two misdemeanor charges for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.According to Elon Athletics, Elliott has not been a member of the football team since December.The police report says Elliott was arrested on Thursday, February 20, after a search warrant was issued.
