Doctor's Orders: Post-study abroad stress syndrome

Doctor's Orders is a weekly satirical column in which two unprofessional, definitely fake doctors offer up prescriptions for their Phoenix patients.  Okay, so you’ve used some of that extra $12 million your parents had lying around and spent a semester abroad.

Column: CAA hoops process taking time, but that's just fine

With a cyclonic ending still on his mind, Elon University men’s basketball coach Matt Matheny chose to start his press conference by talking about the Colonial Athletic Association. Elon had just been handed its third straight loss in the CAA, a 75-72 defeat to James Madison University in which senior guard Austin Hamilton’s 3-pointer missed right before the final buzzer. Instead of talking about that play, Matheny focused on the conference, in which it’s clear Elon is still adjusting.

Administration cites green initiative in emailing Dean's list certificates

While students at Elon University have become accustomed to rapid changes on an expanding campus, many were surprised after receiving their President’s List and Dean’s List certificates for the 2014 fall semester via email instead of the traditional printed ones. Although some students across campus have called the maneuver a way to cut costs, University Registrar Dr. Rodney Parks says the move was more concerned with saving the other kind of green. “We mainly changed it to support our green initiatives of being a paperless environment,” Parks said.

Second-half rally falls short as Elon loses third straight

HARRISONBURG, Va. -- Down by 10 with five minutes to go, the Elon University Men's Basketball Team went on a run, pulling the game as close one point, and creating an opportunity to send the game into overtime as the clock expired. But it was not meant to be as Phoenix guard Austin Hamilton's shot caught only air as the buzzer sounded and James Madison hung on to score a 75-72 win at JMU Convocation Center on Saturday night. In the seconds before the final shot, Elon was helped by a heady play by freshman Dmitri Thompson, who saw an opportunity to steal the ball instead of foul, snatching it away, quickly calling a timeout and giving the Phoenix one final possession with 8.2 seconds to go. The original play coming out of the timeout was called for sharpshooting guard Tanner Samson with freshman Elijah Bryant as the second option, but both were covered leaving the final chance to Hamilton. It was as much of the night had gone for the Phoenix, as James Madison played a zone defense that stymied Elon throughout the contest.

Lost in the zone: James Madison keeps Elon rally in check

HARRISONBURG, Va. — Even the one play where James Madison University didn’t play zone defense, the Elon University men’s basketball team still couldn’t execute. Down 10 with less than five minutes to go and seemingly crumpled up in the zone, Elon scratched its way through for a chance to tie in the waning seconds. But senior guard Austin Hamilton’s 3-point attempt from the right wing missed everything, handing the Phoenix a 75-72 defeat to the Dukes on Saturday, Jan.
