Similar to the experience of Hannah Baker in the popular Netflix series, “Thirteen Reasons Why," many college students struggle with feelings of helplessness every day. Every year more than 1000 college students die from suicide. It is the third leading cause of death for people ages 15 to 24 according to a report by Emory University.
Class of 2021, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the next four years of your lives. I could not be happier that you have decided to attend Elon University, the institution that has made me who I am today. The perspectives, experiences and people you will meet and engage with will undeniably shape your life view.
Class of 2021, I am more than excited to welcome you to Elon University. While I am certainly not nearly the first to do so, I wish to add to the chorus of voices that are glad you are on campus and hoping you will have the most amazing time over the next four years here as part of our community.

Aside from the conferring of almost 1,400 degrees, Elon University's 127th Commencement ceremony yesterday saw two speeches partially spoken in Spanish, a New York Giants balloon strapped to a tassel, and a successful marriage proposal.
When I read the Elon News Network article about a black man being called the N-word by the former president of the NC Mu chapter of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity, I wasn’t surprised. And then I was angry, but still I wasn't surprised. And then I was exhausted at the fact that this was yet another reminder that I am not entirely safe on this campus. This is just one of the many examples of the prevalent racism on this campus, be it overt or not.
As a governing body comprised of historically black Greek-letter organizations, the National Pan-Hellenic Council responds with a heavy heart to the incident regarding the NC Mu chapter of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and the usage of the N-word. This rhetoric is not to be tolerated nor promoted by any members of the Elon University community, especially within Greek life, due to the systemic hatred and pain that is deeply rooted within the history of the word.
Robin Attas, assistant professor of music, will be leaving Elon University and moving back to Canada with her husband, Nicolás Narváez Soza, and their two children. Narváez Soza said he has endured acts of racism since the couple moved to North Carolina in 2013.
Nearly two decades ago, the Italian Supreme Court ruled against the survivor of a sexual assault simply because she was wearing jeans. In their minds, removing them was a two person effort, which made the sexual act consensual. Her attacker was set free.
