Updated 1:35 p.m. Jan. 18 to include information regarding the power outage.
Around 9:00 a.m. Jan. 18, businesses and residents near South Church Street and University Drive lost power. Duke Energy serves the Piedmont Triad area and the cause of this shortage is unknown, according to Burlington Police Department Lieutenant Alex Shockley.
Shockley said that power is expected to be running again by 1 p.m.
The traffic lights at the intersection of South Church Street and University Drive do not have power. These are the only known traffic lights without power in the area.
“Officers will be out there until traffic lights are restored,” Shockley said.
Manager of the 3538 South Church St Dunkin’ Donuts, Dawn Headen, said that they lost power at around 9 a.m. The store is only serving donuts and iced drinks and is only accepting cash.
Headen said she called Duke Energy and they echoed the same information Shockley provided. The 2526 South Church Street Dunkin’ Donuts has power and is running as usual.
Around 1:00 p.m. the traffic lights at the intersection of South Church Street and University Drive were turned back on according to Shockley. He said that most businesses and residents may have power back. It is still unclear as to what prompted the power outage.
