Elon University offices will close at 3 p.m. Jan. 30 to allow for preparation time ahead of the upcoming winter storm.
Vice President of Student Life Jon Dooley announced the closure in an email Jan. 30 that also outlined changes to campus parking and weekend basketball schedules.
The National Weather Service issued a winter storm warning early Friday morning, escalating from a watch. The warning is in effect from 4 p.m. Friday through 7 a.m. Sunday, and warns of between four and seven inches of snow.
Gov. Josh Stein declared a state of emergency Jan. 29. In his executive order, Stein cited the continued below-freezing temperatures, maintaining the ice and snow from Jan. 24 and 25. The upcoming snow is expected to accumulate on top of that ice to create potentially hazardous road conditions.
Dooley’s email asks that parking lots across campus, including at Inman Admissions, Innovation Quad, Koury Athletic Center, Lindner Hall, McMichael Hall and Oaks (visitor and faculty/staff spaces), be cleared beginning at 4 p.m. so that the lots can be cleared of ice and snow remaining from last week. Those lots will remain closed through 5 p.m. Feb. 1.
Elon women and men’s basketball games scheduled for the weekend will continue, though start times have been adjusted to account for team travel. Elon women’s basketball will face off against College of Charleston Jan. 30 at 6 p.m., while Elon men’s basketball will host Stony Brook at 12 p.m. Jan. 31.
While additional weekend events and operations are currently set to continue on schedule, Dooley’s email says he anticipates changes as the storm accumulates, to be communicated Friday afternoon.
