Elon University students and residents of the town of Elon gathered Sept. 5 in downtown Elon for the annual block party, which included vendors, inflatables and live music.
Town of Elon Downtown Development Director Jill Weston said the block party started three years ago when they launched the social district downtown.
The social district is located around the downtown block bordered by West Lebanon Avenue, North Williamson Avenue, West College Avenue and North Holt Avenue. The social district allows people over 21 to purchase a cup from a business that allows them to drink alcoholic beverages in.
Weston said students should continue to come to these events for community connections.
“Community events like this just bring everybody together,” Weston said. “And we're a very unique community. We have senior citizens, we have families and obviously we have students. So this is the type of event that has appeal for everybody."
The block party was sponsored by GreenHawk Corporation and Garman Homes, two real estate developers, according to Weston. GreenHawk Corporation is currently constructing the PARC development in Elon.
Jessica Nunez ’07, an Elon University alum who attended the block party with her son, said she came for the live music.
“We live in Burlington, and we wanted to come see what it was all about,” Nunez said. “I love it. My son is having a great time”
Other activities included a facepainting station and inflatables. The next event that will take place in downtown Elon will be the Elon Farmer’s Market on Sept. 11.
