After delaying classes until noon on Thursday, Elon University has canceled classes for the day due to snow and ice.
In an email sent out to students Thursday morning, Vice President for Student Life Jon Dooley wrote Elon University classes are canceled for Elon, Greensboro and Charlotte campus locations on Thursday, Feb. 20.
According to the email, the closure comes after scattered snow showers hit the area early in the morning and into the midday hours, making road conditions slippery and bridges and shaded areas most at risk to maintain snow and ice cover. Drivers should be cautious as road conditions change throughout the day. Students should check with individual professors for additional class updates.
Dooley wrote Facilities Management will continue to clear and maintain sidewalks, parking lots, and roadways around campus. Even with those efforts, there could be slippery spots on campus, so proper footwear and winter clothing are advised when walking on campus.
Recent forecasts from AccuWeather predict that a few locations in the Piedmont Triad area could experience a fresh coating of new snow, especially near and west of Greensboro, Asheboro, and Rockingham.
A winter weather advisory was issued by the U.S. National Weather Service starting Wednesday morning and will stay in effect until 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20. According to the National Weather Service, less than a half an inch of total daytime snow accumulation is possible.

While university offices are closed, specific offices and services will operate on adjusted hours, including Belk Library, Campus Recreation, Campus Safety and Police, Elon Dining, Moseley Center, and Student Health Services. However, Mail Services will be closed and Elon Express shuttles will not operate. Dooley recommends students should check facilities websites for specific hours of operation as weather conditions and staffing change.
Although in-person classes are canceled, later this evening the Elon Phoenix Men’s Basketball Game v. Towson University will be held as scheduled at 7 p.m. in the Schar Center.
According to Dooley, the university will send out its next weather update by 6 p.m. today through the E-Alert system along with a simultaneous email.
