In response to an Elon Local News story questioning unpaid training planned for tour guides from the Office of Admissions, tour guides will now be paid for the 14.5 hours of training they are set to receive this weekend, according to vice president of university communications Dan Anderson.
As Elon Local News first reported on Monday, the Office of Admissions was unaware of the labor law rules associated with tour guide training.
"We reexamined our plans to conduct this training as unpaid time based on questions raised by student media," said Anderson. "We had not considered the labor laws related to campus student employment."
Anderson says that the university agrees that the time spent in training should be paid. "We have changed our position, and will pay the students. We appreciate the student media bringing this matter to our attention."
Anderson says the estimated 16 hours of training was decreased to 14.5, due to the original email being sent before the schedule was finalized.
