Five singles wins helped lead the Elon University women’s tennis team to a 6-1 win against Davidson College at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center in Greensboro, North Carolina.

The Phoenix earned wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles respectively to claim a team point early on. Senior Barbora Lazarova and freshman Kirsten Ward defeated junior Elaina Cummer and sophomore Jenna Brunner 8-3 at the No. 1 position while junior Taylor Casey and freshman Erica Braschi topped sophomore Sarah Stein and freshman Ava Todd at No. 3 doubles.

The Phoenix swept the top five positions, with freshman Bridget Lidell getting the only loss in a super tiebreaker to freshman Ally Sexton at No. 6 singles after splitting the first two sets.

Freshman Olivia Lucas defeated Anna C. Feaster 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Ward dropped just two games in her straight-set win over Cummer at No. 2 singles.

Lazarova and Casey each won in super tiebreakers. Lazarova outlasted Todd in a super tiebreaker 2-6, 7-6, (7-5), 10-3 at No. 3 singles and Casey pulled off the comeback victory over Stein 4-6, 7-5, 10-6.

Braschi cruised past Brunner 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 4 position to round out the Phoenix lineup.

With the win, Elon improves to 13-6 and earns its second win at the Piedmont Indoor Tennis Center this season.

The Phoenix avoids dropping back-to-back games for the first time since it lost three straight matches from Jan. 24 to Feb. 7. During that stretch, the Phoenix lost to the University of Florida, Georgia State University and Wake Forest University.

Elon will return to action on Friday at 2:30 p.m. at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center when it hosts the College of Charleston. That match will mark the third time the Phoenix have competed against a fellow Colonial Athletic Association school.
