The Elon University women’s lacrosse team lost to Jacksonville University, 13-6, on Friday. The Phoenix trailed early in the contest and was never able to recover from the deficit.

Elon conceded two goals in the first ten minutes of play. Jacksonville attacker Holly Ventimiglia led the attack for the Dolphins, scoring both of the team’s early goals and finishing with five total shots. The Phoenix was unable to find the net until freshman midfielder Abby Godfrey scored with 15:56 remaining in the first half. Godfrey would score again later in the half, but the Phoenix still went into the locker room down 6-2.

After halftime, Jacksonville began to pull away, leading by as many as seven near the conclusion of the game. Elon sophomore goalie Rachel Ramirez made seven saves in the contest, but the Dolphins were persistent- a total of eight different players netted a goal for the team in the game.

Aside from Godfrey, Elon found success on offense with sophomore attacker Sloane Kessler, who also scored twice. The Phoenix attempted a total of 23 shots, 14 of which were on goal. There were 49 fouls in the contest- Jacksonville had 31, while Elon had 18. Both teams combined for six yellow cards throughout the game.

With the defeat, the Phoenix fall to 2-2 overall. Jacksonville moves to 2-1. The Phoenix’s next game comes on Feb. 22, when it travels to Deland, Fla. to face Stetson University at 1 p.m.
