The Elon University Men's Basketball team's seven-game losing streak came to an end Saturday afternoon when the Phoenix pulled out an 83-75 overtime win at the University of Delaware.
The win, Elon's first since a 94-82 victory over Delaware at Alumni Gym on January 24, improves the Phoenix to 12-17 (4-12 Colonial Athletic Association). It marks only the second win for the Phoenix in its last 13 tries.
Up by eight with 2:32 to go, Elon saw the Blue Hens fight back to tie the game at 74 apiece, giving the Phoenix chance to win in regulation with 30 seconds to go. But a short jumper by Austin Hamilton did not fall and the contest went into overtime.
Elon's defense shut down Delaware throughout overtime, not allowing a field goal in the extra period, and going on a quick run to grab the win.
Veterans led the way for the Phoenix. Senior Kevin Blake scored a game-high 18 points while senior Austin Hamilton and junior Tanner Samson each had 16 points. Hamilton also set up teammates well for a season-high nine assists.
Elon closes out the regular season next week when hosts Northeastern on Thursday and UNC Wilmington on Saturday. The Phoenix lost 80-61 to the Huskies on Jan. 31 and fell 82-65 to the Seahawks on Jan. 28.
