The Elon University women’s basketball team had its modest two game winning streak snapped in an 89-56 loss to West Virginia University in Morgantown on Dec. 29.

The Phoenix had finally found its footing after a difficult beginning to the season, beating Campbell University and Mount Olive College in consecutive games, but was unable to keep that momentum going in its loss to the Mountaineers.

The Phoenix was able to hang around early, cutting the Mountaineers lead to 12-6 just before the first media timeout. It was then, though, that the Mountaineers pulled away, leading 51-26 at halftime and never looking back, leading by as many as 37 points, 79-42, with just over eight minutes to play in the second half.

The Phoenix had three score in double figures, led by senior guard Kelsey Harris and junior forward Sam Coffer, each with 11 points. Freshman forward Jenifer Rhodes added 10 points and a team-high seven rebounds.

The Mountaineers had four score in double figures, paced by senior center Asya Bussie with 18 points on 5-for-5 shooting.

The Phoenix will look to bounce back at home in its final non-conference game of the season against North Carolina A&T State University on Tuesday, Dec. 31. The game is set to tip at 4 p.m.
