A small group of the Elon University cross country team competed in the Mountaineer Open in Boone, N.C. Friday Oct. 4 in a race that was added to the schedule just a few weeks ago.

The women’s team finished fourth in the 5K race while the men finished sixth in the 8K race.

On the men’s side, senior Nick Schneider was the first Phoenix to finish, clocking in with a time of 26:07.71. Senior James Stevenson finished just seconds behind Schneider with a time of 26:15.21. Junior Ari Rothschild finished third for Elo,n finishing at 26:24.89.

Sophomore Nick Foley (26:59.34), junior Adam Bernstein (27:27.52), freshman Ian O'Leary (27:52.74) and sophomore Ryan Gwaltney (28:02.61) also ran strong times in rounding out the men’s side.

The women’s side traveled to Boone without their top seven runners, yet managed a solid fourth place finish. Sophomore Sabina Bains finished first for the women’s side with a time of 19:42.08.  Senior Jackie Madden finished second for the Phoenix with a time of 19:53.35, followed by junior Kaitlin Stober’s mark of 20:15.98.

Junior Emily Dunne, senior Amanda Parker, and senior Brennan McDavid rounded out the women’s team with times of 20:29.95, 20:31.31 and 20:35.14, respectively.

The Virginia Tech Hokies swept the meet, finishing first in both the men’s and women’s competition.

The Phoenix will continue their road trip this weekend as the women’s top seven as well as the men’s duo junior Luis Vargas and senior Ben Perron compete in the Greater Louisville Classic Saturday Oct. 5 in Louisville, Ky.
